Color Coordinated Brunch

I'm so happy to have had so many opportunities over the past year to meet up with other Connecticut bloggers, and I will never say no to a brunch, especially when it's at one of my favorite restaurants in New Haven, Harvest.

When the brunch was being organized, we decided to color coordinate - neutrals and pops of red, for the photos, naturally. Thankfully we had a wonderful waiter who happily snapped group photos for us. It started off as a very rainy morning, but as brunch stretched into late afternoon, the sun came out to reveal a very blustery fall day, hence the ponytail - I just couldn't deal with the wind!

These are the last of my photos featuring the fall foliage. Now it's all gone and covered under a blanket of snow. Fall is forever too short a season!

Plaid Blazer

Blazer weather is typically a short spell, I should know, I've got far too many blazers in my closet that don't get nearly enough wear. Naturally when plaid blazers started cropping up and I wanted to get one, I knew it probably wouldn't be best to invest in anything all too expensive. I really liked this one at Macy's, but didn't feel the price was justified by the quality. After a quick browse through H&M, I found this one.

Because I'm somewhat ridiculous, rather than buying the blazer in the store, I instead went to shop H&M online, so that I could use a coupon to get 25% off the $50 price tag.

Only then I went to Target where I found another plaid blazer which looked so similar to the H&M blazer, however it had been clearanced to $25. Naturally I had to buy it, and then, took to Instagram to poll everyone as to which blazer I should keep.

I'd been leaning towards the Target blazer, just because it was cheaper, but the H&M blazer won the poll in a landslide, and what finally got me to make the decision was the sleeve length - it's a slight difference, but when you are as short as I am, that quarter of an inch actually makes quite an impact.

Thrifted Joie Jacket

This Joie jacket was mentioned in my October budget post, and thankfully the weather was good for a bit and I got to wear it! Joie is one of my favorite brands to buy secondhand. Well, I only buy Joie secondhand (or at TJMaxx) because their retail prices are far to high. However $14 for this jacket, which retailed somewhere in the $400 range is a steal.

Also worth mentioning, no I didn't buy a designer bag - I was taking photos with Caitlin and left the purse I'd planning on carrying with this outfit in the car. Rather than go back I just borrowed her cute Louis Vuitton pouch, which did happen to match perfectly. Someday I might have a designer bag of my own. I just keep telling myself I need to stop buying everything else - the $20 Target shoes, the $100 J.Crew dresses, etc., - for a year, and then I'll likely have enough to get a designer bag. Secondhand, of course. I just need to find the willpower to do it!

Peaks of the Week

Last month I gave up refined sugar - an important distinction, as I still wanted to be able to eat fruit and have my teaspoon of honey in my cup of tea. For some reason October always feels like the one month of the year when I can give something up - last year it was dairy.

Once again, all the claims about my body feeling overwhelmingly better or different did not come to fruition. However I was happy that I broke my sugar dependence, and when I was hungry in the evenings rather than reaching for ice cream or candy, I had popcorn (this one, which had the least amount of junk in it I could find, in a microwave brand that also wasn't ridiculously over priced), or cheese and crackers, and if my sweet tooth needed to be sated, golden raisins.

Now, just over a week with allowing myself sugar again, everything I've had has been unbearably sweet. The Halloween candy, my Starbucks holiday drink - with half the syrup, even my favorite Lint dark chocolate bar with the sea salt. So the other night I had raisins. I guess I shouldn't complain!

❖ I whole hardheartedly agree with this author's argument to stop the cheap swag. Just this last month I got two branded blankets, two water bottles, a tote, and an orange plastic beer glass which I deliberately 'forgot' at the event. Yes, I love a good tote, but I'm at capacity. I spent actual money on a cute S'well bottle, so no I'm never going to use the cheap one with someone's logo on it. A flash drive was a clever idea five years ago, now with dropbox and google drive no one uses them. 99% of the swag I take never leaves my car until I'm dropping it at Goodwill.

❖ If you've ever dreamt of having a smart phone you can fold in half, well, you won't have to wait much longer.

❖ Tips from an expert on getting your dog to influencer status. If only I'd started an instagram for Chloe eight years ago... Though to be fair she hates being photographed.

❖ Of course there are no shortages of bloggers with their adorable pups, which admittedly I enjoy even more.

❖ Move over pumpkin pie (I've never really loved you anyway) I want these pumpkin fudge browines.

❖ Adding this coconut tandoori chicken to my must-try list.

❖  I probably wouldn't eat 90% of the food at the 70's dinner party, but my mom still has the copper fish mold and the corresponding Jello Cookbook, so maybe I should just do it. Bonus, this twitter feed confirms that the 70's were a very strange time for food.

❖ This just upsets me so much.

❖ I'm putting these cute pink velvet shoes on my Christmas list.

❖ How fun would this jumpsuit be for the holidays?

Fall Feels

I didn't need my jacket for these photos, and rather than put it on, or tote it around or do any of those things I might normally feel compelled to do, because I planned this outfit and so help me it's going to be photographed! I left it in the car instead. I reveled in the warm fall air, I got an iced coffee (which was perhaps a tad over ambitious, but I suspect it will be the last one I have this year) and I took my photos sans jacket.

The foliage by the Milford duck pond was looking brilliant, orange to my right, yellow to my left, and just enough cloud cover for that perfect even light. Even though I was only out enjoying the weather for a couple hours, I can admit it was my idea of a perfect fall day.

I wore this outfit to the opening of the new Dave and Buster's, the sneakers were a calculated move in case there was Dance Dance Revolution, sadly there was not. I debated sharing the photos I took there and writing a post, but I don't think I will. Mostly because I was a bit underwhelmed by the games. Everything was too big and too bright - how can you play a game if your eyes can't even take in the whole landscape? Also the titles were underwhelming, tell me again why I'd want to play Fruit Ninja with my finger on a 36" screen? But really the lack of DDR was the biggest fault in my eyes. Even though I'm sure I would have failed in five seconds because I'm ten years out of practice, I still would have loved to play.

Choose Gratitude

It's the first week of November. The avalanche of holiday content has already started, and just like years past, I feel like I will become buried in it before I have a chance to appreciate it, or contribute my own. But that isn't important.

What I feel is important right now is to focus on what I have to be grateful for. To stop worrying about how I fit into this world and take a moment to thank the people who love and appreciate me, just as I am.

Thanksgiving often gets steamrolled by Christmas, and for whatever reason, family drama (at least in my house) always seems to flare hotter on the day of giving thanks than the day of giving gifts. But my crazy sister booked a last minute flight to spend Thanksgiving with us, I'll see my nephew and niece, cook with my mom, and just maybe find one moment to reflect on the importance of family, and how fortunate we really are. I hope you can do the same.

And then comes all the shopping. It is a crazy world we live in.
