Milly Skirt

Last August there was a fill-a-bag sale at Coco's on the Green. It was only $10, and while I arrived pretty late in the sale, I was delighted to find this wrap skirt, and even more so when I saw the 'Milly' tag. I'm not sure why, but I've been on a quest to thrift a Milly dress for years. It was probably something that I saw Atlantic Pacific wearing, but it's been so long I don't even remember.

While this skirt was not the dress of my dreams (if I could even recall what that dress might be), for $10 I wasn't going to let it go. As it was fill a bag, I also added a J.Crew white peplum top, a coral cardigan, which had no tags, but was likely from Old Navy or something similar, and a J.Crew white cotton square scarf.

Over the last year, I never wore the sweater and donated it. I haven't worn the peplum top, and this is the very first time the Milly skirt is being worn. The square scarf I use as a lining for my bamboo bag and is apparently the only item I should have left with that day.

I love secondhand shopping, I really do. I've gotten some amazing pieces I never would have otherwise, however I often fall into the trap of buying something just because it's too good a deal to pass up on, and then all that happens is they sit in my closet and take up space.

Organic Results

I wore this outfit the other week to head up to Stamford, CT and pick out some local organic food at Mike's Organic Delivery. I know a little black dress with heels and a big hat isn't really what most people would reach for on a day of basically shopping and errands. I also stopped in J.Crew and left with this belt (it was on clearance!). Then I had a close call with the hat - it blew off my head, into the street and nearly was run over by a firetruck. Has anyone invented a way to keep hats on your head? If not, I guess I need to!

Since I wasn't in Mike's Organic Delivery radius, I had to visit their warehouse in person, which also led to addition of flowers to my cart, which are not listed anywhere on their website that I can find. I am not a fashion blogger if I don't carry flowers unnecessarily.

All you are seeing here are the flowers and the cute little Mike's Organic shopping bag, but I've got a super yummy pasta recipe featuring all the amazing veggies I picked out (save for the carrots) on Cooking in Cashmere today!

If you are a Connecticut resident in Fairfield County, you can sign up for a CSA or on demand deliveries from Mike's Organic. All the produce I selected was delicious and fresh - and of course local!

Slipping Through My Fingers

Each day of summer that passes I feel like I lose a tiny piece of myself. I don't believe I am fully appreciating the warm air and the lingering sunlight. The months once brimming with potential now feel like a glass half empty. I'm pretty sure my sister escaped to California to try and evade this August emotional low. I don't blame her.

Peaks of the Week

Inbox Zero. Since my new computer arrived and I spent the better part of two days getting everything situated and just right, I came across the password for my very first email account, which was with snet. I logged in (through Yahoo, marveling at the fact that an account I haven't really touched in eight years was still active) and looked at all the rows of emails. All from mailing lists I'd signed up for and long since forgotten about. Still they were arriving, the senders uncaring or oblivious to the fact that their begging links never got clicked. So first I unsubscribed from everything, and then deleted eight years of those emails. Which got me thinking about my current emails, of which I have three that I actively use. I started unsubscribing from everything. All the stores, all the newsletters, all the piles of click bait that do nothing but distract. I've had enough. I'm tried of hearing my email chime only to see it's Refinery 29 trying to make me think that Justin Bieber's haircut is something worthy of my attention. It was a great purge. It feels good.

❖ Since we are on the topic of deleting, would you delete all your old tweets? I suppose if something you put out there a decade ago could warrant being fired from your current job, it might be a good idea?

❖ These photos would be beautiful if the subject matter weren't so depressing.

❖ I usually roll my eyes at secondhand shopping tips, but I actually liked these.

❖ Wow, one person manipulated the McDonald's Monopoly game for twelve years before getting caught.

❖ Remember when screen time meant having to sit at a desk? Though to be fair, the time of my dad sharing his computer so I could create my Kid Pix masterpieces was brief before my brother and I had our own computers. I still have fond memories of my first Mac, and my second, my beloved Flower Power iMac.

❖ ThredUp's letter to Burberry, after learning they burned unsold inventory.

❖ I thrifted a pair of vintage earrings this week which actually bear quite a resemblance to this this J.Crew pair (which are on sale!)

❖ I've been scouring ThredUP for pieces from Joie, one of my favorite brands, and I'm eyeing this top.

❖ There aren't many sizes left in this adorable raffia trimmed sandal, but the price can't be beat.

Sentient Coffee.

Hey Shortie

Skort not withstanding, this is the first time I've worn shorts on the blog this year. It's probably only the fifth time I've worn shorts all summer. For many years I've had a love/hate relationship with shorts. There was a long span of time when I refused to wear them outright, but as with most things I previously swore off, my persistence in being part of the blogging community persuaded me otherwise. I found light, swingy shorts that looked and felt more like skirts, I discovered their eases and advantages, but I still haven't gotten over my number one issue, the attention they draw to my thighs.

Shorts now exist in my wardrobe of course, I even bought a new pair last month, though I've yet to wear them. Every time I try them on I convince myself they are just a little too curve hugging for comfort, and retreat to the safety of this baggy boyfriend cut, no matter how bad my derriere looks in them.

Things I Never Wear

I know what the rule is for cleaning out my closet. If I haven't worn it in six months, or a year if it's seasonal, then it should go. I have never subscribed to that rule. I hold on to things. I get sentimental, I convince myself that I might just want to wear it again.

I was in TJMaxx the other day, I came home with a new dress and a kimono. My hands hovered over a set of black velvet hangers, my mind flashing to the unwieldy pile of hangerless clothes taking residence on my desk chair. I forced myself to leave without the hangers and instead confront my closet.

I started with things I've never worn. Most of these things were from thrift or consignment stores. Deals that seemed to good to pass up, or that were serving a fantasy I was having at that moment. A long black linen duster with pockets, a pair of blue and green silk printed joggers, a navy sweater with an anchor.

Then I focused on things I know I haven't worn in at least four years. That might seem like a long time, but it's a number which works for me. I wasn't able to purge everything in that category, there are still some dresses and button downs and pencil skirts that I haven't worn since working in an office with a stricter dress code. I kept the pieces that I tried on and still liked, should my work situation change.

Finally, the aspirational pieces. I did not let these go. I am still hoping that I will wear a pink sequined dress on New Year's Eve, that an occasion for a one shoulder maxi dress will arrive, and that I will want to wear a white lace dress, just because it feels good to wear a white lace dress.

That brings me to this dress; gifted from Hobbs last summer, worn once to photograph it for the post, and finally a second time to a family event last month. Now the challenge is to wear it again.

Forbidden Garden

Last Friday I met up with Diana in West Hartford to take some outfit photos. We shot three looks in the sweltering heat under a grey sky threatening rain. For the last outfit Diana suggested we go to Artisan, the restaurant we'd had dinner at during the last West Hartford blogger shoot, as it has a beautiful outdoor seating area with a garden. We spoke with the hostess who said we could get drinks at the bar, then just head out to the garden.

The space was a bit tight for my 50mm lens, but we took the liberty of moving around some chairs to make it work. We were far from the only patrons snapping away in the garden, but it wasn't long before someone from the restaurant came out and told us that we couldn't take 'professional' photos. I said I wasn't a professional, but he said the issue was with my DSLR, and that we were free to take iPhone photos. A bit of a strange rule, if you ask me, but thankfully we had managed to get some photos taken, finished our drinks, and headed elsewhere for dinner.
