Changing tides

For a long weekend, that went by pretty fast. I mentioned a couple weeks ago that Sean and I were looking for a house, but when I came to the realization that there was no home we could presently afford that seemed worthy of investing in, we deiced to look for an apartment instead.

We were told that rentals go fast, so if we saw one we liked, to make a move. We looked at exactly one apartment. The fact that everything in it is brand new; new kitchen, new bathroom, new floors, fresh paint, was what sold me.

Now I'm faced with the reality that I need to sift through decades worth of things I've accumulated and decide what is worthy of being a part of the new (small) apartment. Downsizing from a walk-in closet that I've already out grown is not going to be fun.

In our attempts to do this move on the cheap, we spent yesterday driving around chasing down furniture on Craig's List (browsing the furniture section is my new favorite way to kill an hour) and I'm hoping to finally give my grandmother's old mahogany furniture a new life with some paint. Everything I see on Pinterest is so amazing... hopefully I won't end up on the 'Nailed-it' board.

  2. Oh, the joys of moving... We've been in the process of getting ready to do it again for the last few months and honestly, the whole experience is exhausting. One of our long weekend tasks was shampooing our carpet. As I type this I'm sitting in our kitchen surrounded by living room furniture because as it turns out, shampooing a carpet in a place you live is way more complicated and awkward than I ever imagined. But, live and learn, I suppose. I can honestly say that downsizing is a wonderful thing for your sanity, except perhaps when it comes to clothes - even though my wardrobe is probably smaller than average for a fashion blogger, closet space is always at a premium and its not so much about space even as about layout. Hopefully the closet in your new place, even if it isn't huge, is well-organized so you can fit everything in it in a way that feels comfortable. Anyway, I digress - congratulations on the new apartment! I hope we're going to get a photographic tour once you've moved in :)

  4. What an adorable dress on you. Downsizing is hard work and your sentimental stuff is not going anywhere so make room for it in the new place. Restyle and Reuse is the key.

  6. House hunting is rough! My husband and I have been living in apartments for the last 4 years. It's crazy that apartments sell so fast. We only looked at one apartment and signed the lease too...haha. Downsizing is a great way to get rid of a lot of junk and clutter. It kind of feels good to get rid of stuff!

  8. Hope you were able to find some furniture pieces you liked! It's hard to find a place to live that feels like home. It's a good thing you aren't just settling for a house.

  10. What a gorgeous nautical dress. It definitely makes a statement. Have a great time finding a new place to call home. And sometimes down-sizing is for the best. Lately I have been watching a lot of the "Tiny House" shows on like FYI or HGTV and I am amazed by the tiny 150-600 square feet homes people buy and how much they can fit in there!

I'm so happy to hear about your apartment! What an amazing thing to look forward to. Downsizing, not so much, but the rest of it sounds great! ;-) (Although, I suspect you'll find creative storage solutions for your favorites!)
