Checking Out, Not In

I'm sure you've seen this greenery covered, twinkle light lit arch before. Even if you have no idea where it is, what building it serves as the entryway to, or that those vines are indeed plastic, you've probably seen this place before.

These are the times we live in, the world made to be instagrammable. A few weeks ago I headed to the city with Alexandra on a mission to visit some of the most trendy photographed locations. Trying to find a moment to snap a photo under this arch without another group, or two, or three, doing the same was a struggle. I'm sure none of them were staying at NOMO SoHo, the hotel this serves as an entryway too. But it's just one of those spots, geotagged so that everyone can find it and take their very own identical photos.

As much as I am aware this photo location is far from original, the draw did not lessen. I've seen it on so many other blogs, always looking so magical, craving for it to be on my own. I like to think of myself as someone who doesn't follow the masses, someone who doesn't always need the next trendy thing, someone who'd rather own a vintage bag than a new one, but do my actions speak to those beliefs? Because here I am, posing under this arch, wearing a dress I saw another blogger wearing on instagram, with vintage earrings I got because they reminded me of a pair I saw at J.Crew.

  1. This is a beautiful backdrop for photos so I can see why you'd want to get photos there! Nothing wrong with seeing something on another blog or instagram account and wanting to do something similar - after all, if we didn't get inspired by others eventually things would get boring and we'd never try different things! :) This is such a pretty dress too, definitely a good idea that you bought it!

    Hope you're having a good week :)

  2. It's funny - I actually ate at Nomo SoHo last summer while on a press trip. Everyone else I was with went nuts getting photos under the arch. And it was beautiful. It looks gorgeous in these photos. But for once in my life, while I was there, I said, no, I'm not going to be that girl. I'm not going to take the photos everyone else is taking. And strangely, I don't regret it. Although I do want to go back, because the food and atmosphere inside were just as magical as the arch outside.

  3. Hey, sometimes you just have to do the thing everyone else is doing because it's awesome! Such a fun backdrop for photos, even with some people in the way :)

  5. I don't think it matters if a great location is super popular....it's kinds like clothes, if it makes you feel good then it's a good thing!!

  9. I do get that some areas are just trendy and IG worthy. But they are that way for a reason right? What a beautiful arch and I love the height and magical aura. Each person makes the pictures their own right and you are so summery chic here!

  10. I can see why you stopped for photos (it's a beautiful spot) and clearly I must be living under a rock, because the location is totally new to me. As for getting inspiration from Instagram / other bloggers?! Right there with you, but that's part of the fun and enjoyment of a like-minded community. Also, love, love that dress on you, such a lovely purchase!! xo

  11. I'm with Jodie- if it makes you happy, DO IT, regardless of if it's a completely original idea or not. (And are ideas- especially in regards to fashion- EVER really original? Aren't they all influenced/inspired by something?) But I know what you mean- you don't want to be like everyone else- but this shoot is seriously so pretty, I'm glad you shot it!
