Ten Days in a Carry On

When I started packing for California I knew I didn't want to have to check a bag. Not just for the added cost, but also for the inconvenience of hauling around multiple bags, and my propensity for over packing. I wish I had ten outfits to post, but of course life always gets in the way and I only ended up getting five of them photographed. However, I did manage to cram far more than ten outfits into my single carry on, with my laptop, camera, two purses, snacks, and a novel tetrised into a beach bag serving as my personal item. Oh and a giant straw hat, just to prove how nuts I am.

Considering that shoes take up the most room, I packed a lot of flat sandals, one pair of heels, and my converse sneakers, which I never wore. In my mind, sneakers felt like a logical choice, but I hardly ever wear them at home, so what made me think they'd suddenly become my go-to while I was away?

Other things I packed and didn't need included two pairs of jeans (though if I'm being honest I did need them, just only when I got back to the east coast, but more on that another day), more than one pair of statement earrings, more than one pair of sunglasses, more than one swimsuit (I packed three), and if I'm being honest, more than one purse. I was convinced I'd be wanting with only one, but I ended up carrying this straw bag most of the trip, and there was one day I borrowed a bag from my sister, but more for the sake of mixing things up for outfit posts than actual necessity.

I'm quite pleased that I was able to prove to myself, my sister, and the world that I could pack for ten days in just a carry on, but I'll admit it was only made possible because my sister has a steamer. (Anyone who tells you rolling clothes leaves them less wrinkled clearly isn't then jamming them into my carry on.)

  2. When I travel I always try to have one bag ... as it's much easier and faster in airports!

    Nice black and white outfit!

  3. Haha yea, packing into just a carryon is hard stuff! Especially in Winter, but I have done it! It helps that you get a personal item too which I usually make a large bag.
    Such pretty photo locations too!

  6. Dang girl!! That' so impressive. I haven't packed in a carry on only in forever. And I hope I don't have to really. I'm a terrible packer and I always crave variety...at least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

  7. You did so well fitting so much into a carry on! I'm a terrible over packer, I always pack things 'just in case' which means I of course never wear them! It's great you got some outfit photos too even if it wasn't as much as you expected.

Hope you are having a good week so far :)

  8. You look lovely in this outfit! Also, wow for being able to fit so much! I learned my lesson and almost pack too little since we always do laundry when we travel on longer trips. I also minimize accessories as well because I'm already lugging around my kids' luggage!

  9. Yeah, rolling clothes when you pack, may give you a bit more space, but they come out super wrinkled. I love this look, this top looks amazing on you. Gorgeous photos too!

  12. I have gotten my luggage lost once and since that happened I pack it in a carry on. I lost so many outfits and shoes it was awful. I loved the earrings you wore with this outfit!

  13. Babe, you're absolutely rocking that off-shoulder top! So pretty with the shorts. Anyway, wow, having just a carry on for a 10 day trip is quite a feat. I don't think I can do that. Kudos to you dear!

  14. I will always be impressed that you managed ten days in a carry-on, no matter how tightly packed it was. The reason I find packing carry-on only so difficult is that I always get cold, even in warm places - it was 30 degrees while we were in Italy but I still wore sweaters half the time, so I am constantly packing for a year's worth of seasons rather than just the one that is presently ongoing. That and changes of shoes because, let's be honest - I always need a change of shoes, even if I'm wearing flats all day :P

  15. Such great shots Lydia.
I am also back from a long trip ! Fifteen days out if a suitcase are no fun.
My trip was part vacation, part work, red carpet, a wedding and then some.
I wore everything but a pair of socks and unlike you I actually chose not to pack a single pair of jeans.
