August Light

How rapidly the daylight hours shrink the moment August ends. Sunlight past 6 p.m. feels like a dream.

This is the last set of the true summer photos. I'm not sure why I held on to them for so long, though perhaps it's because I don't want to accept that summer is over.

Dining Out: Camacho Garage

After the lock-down in March, every blogger event I'd had on my calendar was cancelled, and truthfully, I didn't think there would even be new restaurants and businesses opening this year. But no matter what we face, we forge on; while many businesses in my area were shuttered, new ones still opened.

When I received the email inviting me to attend a real, in-person, opening of a new restaurant last month, I didn't hesitate to send my R.S.V.P., especially considering the executive chef Arturo Franco-Camacho is behind many of my favorite restaurants (past and present), I knew an evening at Camacho Garage was not to be missed.

The space in the Westville neighborhood of New Haven has the industrial feel of a vintage garage, with several all glass garage doors that open to the outdoor seating area, allowing for lots of air flow and indoor seating that is effectively outdoor seating for as long as the weather will hold out. In addition to the huge horseshoe bar inside (patrons are currently separated by plexiglass partitions) there is an additional bar outside. The bar menu features the Geronimo Margarita and the Roomba Mojito, nods to Chef's past restaurants, both of which are delicious. While I never visited Roomba before they closed in 2007, I can say I truly miss Tacuba Taco Bar (which was inspired by Roomba) and Camacho Garage seems to embody the feeling and Mexican street food of Tacuba.

While I only sampled a small portion of the menu, everything was delicious - guacamole and tacos of course, but I truly enjoyed the dishes I'd never experienced before; a ceviche comprised of mushrooms, cactus, and onion; a Molcajete bubbling with molten queso, mushrooms and poblanos; and the most delightfully flavorful dessert of a Maria cookie topped with a caramelized sweet plantain and cajeta.

Even while I was still missing the social aspect of past events, it was still a lovely evening to be out seeing some familiar faces from a six foot distance and sampling amazing food.

Take any opportunity to enjoy dinner at the open and airy Camacho Garage while the weather is still favorable, and maybe try to get a patio table close to a heater if you love impractical footwear as much as I do.

What to Wear for Valentine's Day

I haven't done much in the way of celebrating Valentine's day the past few years, however this year my mom, sister, and I are hosting a Galentine's Day, and when I reviewed my closet for potential outfits, this maxi dress stood out. It has only been worn once, Christmas Eve of 2018, and never properly photographed, so it seemed like a perfect choice.

Another small nod to the occasion with my double heart earrings, and topped off with this vintage inspired faux fur coat; I will be the most glamorous single girl drinking wine and eating chocolate at home with her girlfriends this February 14th.

If you have actual cause for celebration or an outing, I found a few similar maxi dresses and bold heart shaped earrings which I've linked below.

What are your Valentine's plans?

Bright Spot Through the Clouds

Over the weekend it rained nearly non-stop. Torrential, buckets of rain. I suppose since this is the only rain Los Angeles is getting for probably the rest of the year, it has to get it all in?

On Saturday I accompanied my sister on her side hustle, which is grocery shopping and delivery. We had to brave the rain through four Trader Joe's shopping trips, but at least they all had different free samples (tell me I'm not the only one who feels motivated to go there for the samples alone). At the end of the day just before sunset there was the most beautiful rainbow, or so I saw on Instagram, on multiple accounts. Sadly, we missed it.

Sunday was set out to be another full day of rain, but the sun came out for a bit, and we diverted from another grocery store run to snap these photos. Just as we finished all the clouds rolled back in and the rain resumed. Fingers crossed there will be more bright skies for the rest of my stay, especially because the only boots I brought are suede, and this jacket is both missing its hood, and isn't waterproof.

P.S. I'm terrible at packing.

Stroll Through La Jolla

Over the weekend my sister, her roommate, her roommate's dog Henry, and I went on an overnight trip to San Diego. Our first stop was in La Jolla to brunch and visit the seals. Even though I know my sister and I stopped there on our 2016 trip, I don't recall taking much time to wander around the town, which is quite adorable.

When I saw this pink hotel, I knew my pink backdrops had to continue, and I was excited to get Henry in on the shoot. I hope Chloe doesn't feel offended I'm walking other dogs!

Mongrams with Marleylilly

Thank you to Marelylilly for sponsoring this post.

When I was in middle school I identified that a monogrammed backpack was the epitome of a status symbol. I wanted one so badly, and when a new school year came around and I'd managed to wear down my mother enough to order one for me, I naturally made the most impractical color choice there was, purple tie dye. Nevertheless, I carried that bag with pride far longer than I should have, while my peers moved on to carrying their logo emblemized designer bags and carrying their books in their arms, I had my monogrammed backpack.

Even though the backpack has (thankfully) been retired for many years now, there is something about a monogrammed bag that still elicits those feelings of status and clout in me, so I was delighted when Marleylilly wanted to collaborate with me. The online store has a truly expansive product offering of pieces that can be monogrammed or personalized with a name. While I was drawn to this gorgeous leather bucket bag, options run the gamut from monogrammed dishtowels to duck boots.

As for the bag, I love that the leather is soft, but also structured, the drop handles are long enough to be worn over the shoulder, but also short enough that the bag wont touch the ground if I carry it in my hand - occasionally and issue when you are as short as I am! And of course, the gold foil monogram stands out beautifully. It's a classic piece I know I will carry for years.

I will always believe that a monogrammed item makes for an especially thoughtful gift, and even though we've but the holidays behind us, there is always a birthday, a baby, or a wedding around the corner - not to mention simply shopping for yourself!
