The Escape

"I allow time for leisure and renewal."

I'm not a spontaneous person. My idea of spontaneity is buying a nail polish while I'm waiting in line at TJMaxx, so when I mentioned to Sean how badly I wanted to escape the cold greyness of Connecticut for a bit, and he said, "Okay how about Miami on Monday?" (This was the Thursday prior.) Booking those plane tickets is probably the most impromptu thing I've ever done.

We only had four days, because Sean did want to miss any work, but getting to spend four days by the beach, and just relaxing was so amazing. We booked a really cute Airbnb with direct beach access in South Beach. There were towels and beach chairs, so I all I needed was my swimsuit and my book and I was good to go.

I will mention that flying out of New York was a big mistake - yes, the tickets were much less than flying out of Hartford, but I didn't want to miss a whole day to travel, so I booked a 9 A.M. flight, putting us in rush hour traffic as it was, then there was an accident on the George Washington Bridge, resulting in us being stuck on the highway, not moving for 40 minutes. All in all, the trip which was supposed to take an hour and a half took over four hours. We missed our flight with United Airlines and they wanted $500 to book us a new flight. So we bought new tickets on online which were $85 each for a much later flight. Needless to say, we lost the whole day to travel.

Little did we know, that missing the outgoing flight cancels the return flight, so when we tried to check in to our return flight, we were told our tickets had no value, and that no actual person in the airport could help us, we had to call. I was given the same option of $500 to 'change' our tickets. I was so upset, no one I had spoken to on Monday told us that missing our flight would cancel our return, I would get no refund for the tickets I purchased, the flight I wanted to take was already full, and it took over an hour on the phone with my and Sean's refusal to back down on their ridiculous fees before we finally got tickets home. I don't know if all airlines are the same, but I'm never flying with United again.

Sorry for the rant! Other than that, I had such a wonderful time in Florida soaking up the sun and getting to wear my summer clothes! This outfit was the one I was most looking forward to wearing - trendy and fun, plus the pants are stretchy and comfortable, which was perfect for the indulgent dinner we had after taking these photos.

  1. These airlines are a ripoff! I'm glad you eventually got to enjoy some beautiful weather. Perfect outfit for Miami and love your bag.

  2. What an adventure! I have a love hate relationship with United (we mostly fly them transcontinental). I'm glad you finally got to get on the return flight and at least enjoy Florida!

  3. Oh my goodness! That sounds like a travel experience that someday, many years from now, when the wounds are less raw, you will be able to laugh about - but that, in the moment was incredibly, and needlessly stressful. I try to avoid flying United if I can manage it, but I'd be hard pressed to tell you a North American airline that is any better, to be truthful. It's a bit sad. Either way, how wonderful to have three days in the Maimi sunshine right next to the beach! And well done you for doing something truly spontaneous :)

  4. That's craziness, Lydia! It's so fabulous you could get away, but the hassles make for an unforgettably annoying story! Hopefully you'll be able to look back and laugh about this later---because Miami?? Sounds so ideal!!

  6. Loving this outfit!!!
and UGGHHH!! That really stinks about the flights! I've never flown United, but I've also never missed a flight so not sure about that. But I usually fly with Southwest and they're great with things like this! They also let you cancel and re-book flights when needed. Not sure if they cancel your return flight if you miss your first one though, but I would think not.... (and yea, never fly out of NYC unless its' international! So horrible getting there)

  10. Oh my goodness! What a fiasco! I had no idea about missing an outgoing flight cancels your flight back. That is ridiculous! Glad you were finally able to get out there and back. It looks like you had an amazing time there though!

  12. Oh no, how horrible that an otherwise relaxing and fun experience was made so frustrating by the airline! And not letting you use your return tickets, that's terrible! I had no idea they did that. I hope you still had a positive time overall, and it didn't cost you too much to get back home :(

  16. One of the things I'm really happy I have learnt as I've grown up is embracing spontaneity! There's something about being spontaneous that is somewhat relaxing and exciting at the same time.

  17. What a fun getaway (besides all of the plane ticket drama!). I am so not a spontaneous person. A trip like this might set me over the edge! But a few days at the beach would be worth it!

  22. Well despite the travel fiasco it sounds like you got a much-deserved vacation!! How wonderful! Airlines have such crazy rules and they charge so much... I book a lot of flights for my job (for other people) and it always amazes me how the littlest things can cost so much, and the price can vary so much just depending on when you book. Nuts!
