Sunflowers

Sometimes I'm one of 'those' bloggers, toting fresh flowers around in my bag, trying to pretend that I did not orchestrate their purchase solely around my outfit photos. Which isn't to say I wasn't planning on buying them, just that I deliberately chose to carry a tote and did not leave the grocery store with any frozen food so that outfit photos could occur upon my departure.

Staging is a funny thing. First and foremost, I always try to be authentic here. What you see is what I wore, and while somedays the heels may have only been on for a brief period, I did wear them. Hats on the other hand I've been known to throw on simply for the sake of photos, however that is not the case here. This hat was worn all day to hide the fact that I was lazy and hadn't washed my hair.

You should also know that I have never once fed the ducks here, which seems to be the main draw of this location for everyone else who visits it. I've come here dozens of times to take my photos, but only once lingered on a park bench and watched the water fowl scrabble for crumbs. It may not be authentic, but it makes for a better photo than the parking lot of Trader Joe's. I suppose the lines between the reality on the blog and that of life will always be a little blurry.

  1. Such a pretty location! And yes...sometimes we have to fake a little bit when we blog, it's authenticity with a bit more fun, haha :)

  2. Ha I totally get it and agree but I totally prefer to see a gorgeous background as opposed to the parking lot..just saying. :) Super cute look.

  4. I think most people prefer the pretty version of blogging as opposed to the reality of spending your whole day at the office or buying frozen food to your gorgeous sunflowers. I think sometimes we put alot of pressure to be what we think we are supposed to be and instead just do what we like when it comes to our blogs ;)

  5. I think there's nothing wrong with a little staging in blog photos if it makes for prettier photos!

  12. I like the thoughts you wrote here about blog versus reality. I don't mind styling things in a certain way (fresh flowers, etc.), but I wouldn't buy things just for the blog (things I wouldn't actually wear). I like that your outfits are always outfits you'd actually wear!

  13. Staging is indeed a funny thing. I think many people come down on bloggers for lacking authenticity, but the truth is, very few of us do things just to suit our blogs... whereas many of us, myself included, do modify our routines slightly in the hopes that better blog photos result :) Personally, staged or not, I love the look of carrying flowers in a tote bag. I almost did the same thing this weekend. I mean really, is there any outfit that sunflowers don't go with? I don't think so.

  14. I think all bloggers can relate to that. I think that as long as you remain authentic, it works out. I am the same way--I did wear the stuff I photograph . . . even if it isn't on the same day it's posted or I switched out my heels for flats to run kids around or what not. These photos, as always, are lovely and I love the maxi and addition of the beautiful flowers.

  15. What a beautiful setting!! and I'm totally ok with the cliche flowers in a bag post! They are so bright and happy. Your outfit is chic and on point as always! I love the hat :)

  18. You made me laugh, Lydia!! So true... the odd Starbucks coffee-to-go... or bloggers in high heels standing in the snow!
Your look is absolutely gorgeous though - including the sunflowers :-)

  21. I love your honesty! I do my best to stay true to what I actually wore, but I am like you. Typically the heels don't last very long!

  22. You are a natural for the photographer and staging is part of the fun. You wear that dress very well.

  23. I think its important to keep it real - and you do.
AS you know I rarely stage anything.
Now, for the dirty hair try Batiste its really good and I think that its time for you to feed the ducks.

  24. Technically, you could fit some non-flower purchases at the bottom under the flowers, right? I think all bloggers are guilty of staging. That's what makes the pictures more interesting. I love the fit of this maxi and love it with the hat (unwashed hair and all)

  25. First of all, love this look. I am not big on "faking" pictures either. What I wear is what I really wear (although sometimes I put it on against to take the pictures). Also glad you didn't feed the ducks. As a small child I was viciously attacked by frightening ducks because I had a bag of bread in my hands and I was the same size as them (this may be a gross exaggeration of the events, however this is the way that I remember it). You never know when those ducks will turn on you!

  26. You look gorgeous! I love you in hats :) I feel the same way about staging. I am always authentic in my posts because I think that's the whole reason for blogging but I know some girls out there are more editorial. Staging is fun when possible though! I think carrying flowers are my favorite prop.

  28. Oh how I love your honesty. These sunflowers really do add a nice pop of color, though, especially against all that black and white! Deeeee-licious color combo, my sweet Lydia! :D

Isn't it funny how we pass by things over and over but never necessarily interact with them? I can think of countless restaurants, stores, and parks I haven't been to simply because I have been living in the same spot for so long.

Also I loved your last post--"I walked to the beach. Briskly." Hey man, that's all it takes! ;)

PS) yes, I actually do have a gallery wall for art in our house! However, now all the art I am making is much too big or clunky for a wall, so we're simply having to store that in the basement, bahaha. Ah, to have a studio one day...!

  30. Sunflowers are the perfect accessory! Love the dress and that hat, perfect summer look...And you're right! Sometimes I don't get a chance to snap photos of my outfit, so I get all gussied up the next day in the same thing just to take photos. I still wore it, but not then. Hah!

  31. I honestly don't see anything wrong with a little bit of creative staging. I even think a certain degree of it is expected these days. I appreciate that you are being transparent about it. Your hat and flowers really complement your look!

  32. I don't think there's anything wrong with a little planning for a gorgeous set of blog photos. Seriously, these are stunning! I do hope that you went back to the grocery store later for the most important frozen staple though, ice cream!

  37. You will probably be surprised, but I absolutely LOVE sunflowers. They add sunshine and happiness to any surroundings I think. I very much like to buy my self some during the winter, when the weather is grey and it seems like a lifetime until summer will arrive. That striped maxi is beautiful by the way! :)
