Missteps

I'm going to be honest, my resolve to not shop this month hasn't been going too well. I know, not even two weeks in and I feel like I've already made half a dozen excuses to buy things. It started off innocently enough, I'd been trying to get these sandals from Target since August but every size I tried wound up too big. I finally settled on a 6.5 wide, and for reference I usually wear an 8.

Then I got invited to the opening of a new Boscov's Department store, and since I had gift card money to shop with, I did... but ended up spending more than I had.

Next I tricked myself into ordering another Goody Box from ThredUP; it hasn't arrived yet, but it would take a great deal of willpower to not keep anything.

Finally I placed an order with Zara for a rust colored bodysuit. I happened to see it on another blogger and it was EXACTLY what I had been looking for, and once again, willpower crumbled.

I suppose if I've learned anything from all the self-help books I've read, it's that I shouldn't let today's failure dictate tomorrow's failure. Everyday is a new chance to start fresh, and try to stay on the path I want to be on. Ultimately I want to be a person who buys new clothes and doesn't feel rife with guilt, but rather enjoys those things, and doesn't let them hang unworn forever. (Which I kinda do.)

  1. not shopping is hard and you have to remove all temptations to succeed. However you look lovely in that dress and I love the zipper details.

  2. Some months are better than others! The important part is to be happy with what you got!

  3. My resolve usually crumbles when it comes to shopping as well (I just did an insane amount of online shopping last night, in fact) - but at least it sounds like you got some great items. And I absolutely this black dress, the zipper detail is really special.

  4. I think we can all be hard on ourselves as we all have those moments when it's just not going the way we had planned and we don't have the will power to say no. Thankfully as you said, each day is a new day!

  7. That is such a fun dress, I like the zipper feature! :)

It is hard when we want to stick to a budget but there are so many tempting purchases around! I think being wardrobe content is a big part of why it's easier for me to stick to a budget and have no-shop months, it gives me time to enjoy and use purchases I bought in previous months. But it's certainly not been an easy journey to get there, it's taken lots of practice and trial and error! But failure is an event, never a person, and tomorrow is always a new day :)

Hope that your weekend is off to a nice start! It's a rainy day here but we have a birthday party to go to so it will be fun :)

  8. OH man, this sounds like me. The moment I say something is NOT happening or I'm going to be good at not spending money, BOOM! It's a small set back and you've shown so much restraint over the years, don't beat yourself up!

  9. I struggle like you do, Lydia. Maybe we need to start a Shopper's Anonymous together. I was hoping to get through October without any purchases, but succumbed to some leopard booties.....I'm sure I'll love them but I still have some guilt!!

  10. Resolving not to shop, especially as the weather is changing from warm to cold, which is something we almost all already struggle with, is an incredibly hard thing to take on. I can totally understand why your resolve is wavering. But you're right - today's failure is not tomorrow's failure. It took me a long time to really wrap my mind around that, particularly as it came to eating healthfully. But every day really is a new day and another chance to succeed at not shopping, or not eating refined sugar, or whatever it is you set your mind to :)
