Second Time is the Charm

I've reached the end of the California photos. For my last weekend in Los Angeles my brother flew out to celebrate my sister's birthday, and we had a fun sibling weekend. I think the last time just the three of us spent a day together was probably a decade ago in Boston.

On Friday we drove to Malibu, my brother rented a Mustang convertible and even though it was still a little too cold to have the top down, we did anyway. Driving through the windy canyon roads, taking in the views, hoping the rain would hold off. We stopped for lunch at Neptune's Net, where I'd recommend sticking to the basics, like fish and chips, and be forewarned, there are no proper restrooms.

As we crawled through traffic on the way back to L.A., the sun broke through for a bright moment, and since we were driving down Abbot Kinney Boulevard at the time, I suggested we take a quick detour to the canals, partly because my brother hadn't seen them yet, but mostly because I wanted to take outfit photos before the rain came and stole my chance. Clearly the sun didn't stick around, but I'm happy this Joie maxi dress finally got photographed. I'd actually purchased it specifically for my previous visit to California last September. While I did wear it on that trip, it was out to dinner on my last night, and the blurry iPhone photos never did make it to the blog.

On Saturday it poured, we spent the day wandering around LACMA, which was so huge that after four hours we still hadn't seen it all, but were too tired to continue. It would have been fun to take photos at Urban Lights in the rain, if only because it was a rare moment that the popular art installation was deserted. If only I had thought to bring my umbrella - but who thinks it's going to rain for eight weeks in southern California!

Saturday night was an early one, then I was up at 4:30 a.m. for my flight home, back to the snow I'd so happily left behind. But spring is nearly here, so I know I can't complain!

Cost Per Wear

When I arrive home from a trip, I like to unpack and do laundry immediately. I hate the thought of that suitcase sitting there and taking up space, plus having lived out of it for two months, there is no need to do so for one more day.

Of course when I unpacked I had to grimace at all the unworn clothes I trekked 2,500 miles just to bring home and hang right back up again. I know I packed optimistically, but even if it had been warm and sunny the whole time, I might not have needed three pairs of black sandals. I never wore the red maxi dress I thought I might style for a Valentine's shoot, nor did I wear any of the four pairs of dress pants I brought. Instead I lived in jeans, my Créme de la Créme sweatshirt, (which never made it into outfit photos, but was by and large my MVP of the trip), my field jacket, and my silver mules (which also didn't get photographed very much).

That naturally brings me to discuss the tripod I bought specifically so I could take outfit photos on my own. Cost per use: $20.
At least now my sister has a tripod?

4th Street Bridge

When I took photos with Jessica in the Arts District of Los Angeles, we were able to get a couple outfits in, and for our second shoot location, Jessica had chosen the 4th Street Bridge. Every blogger loves a good bridge, naturally.

While I'm now back on the east coast, and back to the snow, I do still have a couple more sets of photos from California to share. I really wish I had more, that was a failure on my part! Sadly it will be right back to winter outfits while I await the arrival of spring.

Casual Friday

It's my last weekend in Los Angeles. It doesn't seem that the weather wants to send me off on a high note, with more grey and rain in the forecast, but I do hope that could still change, as my brother flew out for a little sibling trip and were were really hoping for a gorgeous day to drive down the coast. Regardless of weather, I'm sure we'll find something fun to do.

I have so many mixed feelings about my time here. It's been a crazy two months, I feel like there was so much I didn't do, like venturing out on my own and exploring, but driving here has been tough for me. I'm not the most confident driver, and it took me a very long time to get to a place where I felt comfortable driving somewhere new in Connecticut. Here, where an average road could have four lanes of traffic going in both directions is pretty much my nightmare. My brother on the other hand loves to drive, and rented a Mustang convertible for the weekend, so I'm very much looking forward to not having to drive.

These photos were the result of my attempt to find another piece of wall art for photos and then being less than thrilled with the results. Perhaps it was the wrong time of day, or I needed to bring a wider lens, or maybe I'm just not a wall art kind of gal? I know plenty of bloggers and people alike who go crazy over the wall art, there was even that piece which popped up in West Hollywood last year which required you to have 20,000 followers to take a photo there. Clearly people are obsessed with them, and I am evidently not one of those people. Flowering trees however, are very much me.

I hope you have some fun weekend plans, and to my Connecticut friends, I'll see you soon!

Golden Hour in Malibu

Last weekend I went to dinner at the oft Instagrammed Malibu Farm, a restaurant situated on a pier. The view was lovely, especially as the sun started to set, and if you've followed my blog for any length of time, you might know that docks during golden hour are my most favorite time and place for outfit photos.

When the sunlight catches my hair and ignites it bright gold, it might be the only time I don't mind my frizzy flyaways.

Unstoppable Style

I've mentioned the dire parking situation in Los Angeles, it's been one of my least favorite things to deal with. Last week when I was meeting up with Jessica in the Arts District, I circled looking for street parking for fifteen minutes to no avail. Determined not to spend $10 to park in a lot I drove a bit further and found a $5 lot. Now I just had to walk half a mile (not exaggerating) to the spot where we were getting coffee!

Thankfully, I'd chosen to wear the new slingbacks Vionic sent me, as I know I can rely on them to provide comfortable and supportive footwear. The soft kid suede needs no breaking in, and the low heel provides just enough height while still being walkable. I always appreciate a comfort footwear brand that doesn't compromise on style.

After Jessica and I had our coffee and I recovered from the stress of parking, we set out to take outfit photos with some flowering bougainvillea - it had been at the top of my Los Angeles photo bucket list, and I was delighted we were able to make it happen! Sadly, I fear not too many more of my dream photo shoots will get crossed off my list this trip, as I finally booked a flight home and this will be my last week in L.A.!
