Why I Love Shopping Secondhand

I know I mentioned last week how sometimes my best thrift shopping intentions can backfire on me and I buy things I never wear. However, those missteps will never cause me to hang up my $10 vintage straw sunhat, here is why:

I enjoy the hunt. I'd be lying if I told you I didn't enjoy the challenge of trying of thrift a certain piece, be it a specific style, like these white culottes, a favorite brand, like Joie, or a decade old dress I never stopped wanting but didn't buy do to the price tag. Scouring the racks at my favorite secondhand stores can feel like a treasure hunt. I never know what I might find, even if often I leave empty handed.

I can afford more designer brands. I never knew how much I would love Ferragamo shoes until I found a pair at a consignment store. I would never have dared to try on a pair in a department store, as I knew I couldn't buy them. However once I knew that first pair fit me like Cinderella, I could start seeking out more slightly loved Ferragamos. My best score would have to be the slides I'm wearing here, a steal at only $9.

I try out styles and trends I'm not ready to invest in. I never would have imagined that crop tops and culotte pants would be a silhouette I'd love wearing, and while I found nearly an exact dupe to the pants I'm wearing to link to, I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to spend $166 on them. I certainly wouldn't, which is why I took to eBay and bought this vintage pair for a mere $10. If I wore them once and decided they weren't for me, there wouldn't be any hard feelings about donating them. Same with this lace crop top - the retail was $188 and I got it for $6.50.

I love shopping in all it's forms, I wont lie, I'm probably not going to give up shopping retail anytime soon, but knowing there is a whole world of amazing secondhand pieces out there always manages to give me a thrill.

  1. It is the hunt and the exhilaration when you find things for a fraction of the cost. I've never found a pair of Ferragamos though.
I probably will never give up retail entirely but I am glad that thrifting is more cool now----it seems like there is a new shop popping up all over our area recently!!

  2. It's definitely the best way to get our hands on designer pieces! I haven't done a good thrifting day in a while. But I should keep resisting haha

  3. It's been a while since I've been able to hit my favourite second hand shops and I really miss it. I need to carve out some time to shop used again ... soon.

  4. These pants are so chic! I love the flow of the fabric, they look so soft! I’ll admit I’ve never been thrifting. Maybe I’m too lazy to hunt, maybe I’ve never been to a good thrift store. Either way, I love seeing what others find!

  7. I am always so impressed by your thirft finds - and the incredible deals you score. While I am not a great thrifter to start with, which I will freely admit, I do believe that it helps to live in the right place to find amazing thrift items. I have, not surprisingly, scored amazing pieces in Paris time and time again, while despite my best efforts, I've thrifted only two things in Winnipeg in my entire life. (I thrifted a few more in Vancouver, but not many.) These days, we have an amazing luxury consignment store here, and it's great for finding designer pieces you may have missed out on, but the pieces are mostly unworn and priced accordingly. What we don't have is anywhere like Coco's on the Green, which curates its selection well but doesn't have a designer price point. I will always envy your proximity to it and all the amazing pieces you find there.

  8. I thought this was a maxi skirt at first - perfect pairing of the navy lace top with the culottes! :)

I just wish I had more time for second hand shopping, I agree it's the best as you can find some real gems, but it does take a bit longer than traditional shopping and with two little ones I don't often get time to browse!

Hope that you are having a lovely week so far :)

  9. Oh the hunt.... that is my favourite part and of course learning about new brands when I see them in the racks. I will stop, google and find a whole new world when it comes to fashion.

  11. Oh yes second shopping has it's advantages and the biggest being able to afford designer clothes. Plus yeas it is better for the environment. I am still guilty of buying fast fashion but I am trying to do less of this.

  15. I'm always jealous of people who can shift through and find great secondhand pieces. I don't have the patience, but those $9 slides might make me rethink that!
