Rosy Days

Was that really a three day weekend? Because you could have fooled me. I think I need another three days, or possibly more. My sister heads back to California today, time again moved too quickly.

This weekend I barely took any photos, which seems strange when I reflect on the last decade of documenting my outfits and every other aspect of my life. With my photo memory, I can quickly flip back to last Memorial Day Weekend, or the year before that, or before that, and call up where I was, what I ate, what I wore, if the sun was out, or if we were hunkered indoors avoiding the rain. To not record the weekend means that in the years to come, there will be a gap. Surely next year I'll recall that my sister was home and it was raining, but what about the following? People argue that we should focus on being in the present rather than photographing the present, but the photographs remain and serve as a constant link to our pasts.

A quick flip through my phone or hard drive reveals a myriad of important dates, unimportant dates, and endless cups of coffee. All the times of my life, good or bad, made better by the rosy haze the passage of time imparts on our memories.

Just consider these photos; the trees were out, bursting bright with pink, now those blooms are long gone. I don't recall which day of the week this was, even though it wasn't that long ago, but the meta data in the photo does, and I'll always know which day the trees peaked in 2018 for years to come. I'll remember that I dug up those old enamel earrings I hadn't worn in ages, and I'll remember that it was my mom behind the camera when I catch her reflection in my sunglasses.

You could be in the moment and not take photos, but I'd recommend taking at least a few, consider it like leaving a note to your future self so that the rosy memories are always there.

  1. I so agree with you and not only because I always love taking pictures but it does serve as a memory. Part of why I love to scrapbook too. Every now and then I flip through the pages of pictures and just memories come flooding by. I feel some memories that might have been lost if it was written down. Time is fast and it feels like it just keeps going even when we do slow down!

  2. What you say is absolutely true. Part of the reason I started a blog was to have a reason to take photos. I was never much good at taking photos or people, or myself, before that. There are huge chunks of my life from which there is absolutely no photographic evidence - my teen years, for example, and much of my time at university. While at the time, I may not have thought those moments were worth photographing, I'm sorry not to have any pictures now and so I make a much more concerted effort to capture moments as they happen than I did when I was younger. The photos aren't always great, but that isn't really the point.

  3. Very nice post and cool outfit! Pictures are great ... not only ours but also the ones from the past ... it's such a great moment to view oldest ones that are kept in an old box ... people are living again then!

  4. This is so true, lady- I look back on old blog posts and I can still remember what was happening in my life at the time of that shoot, or how I was feeling that day, what I did before/after. The photos anchor our timelines- and not just the Facebook varieties, but our LIFE timelines!

  5. Sometimes i feel that if it were not for pictures I would not remember the last few years. I have learned to rely on them and not on my memory....
So its ok to take a few of them.
I love the earrings and how your top matches the glorious trees.

  6. I just pinned this look--I love it so much and want to recreate it asap. I totally agree with you about photos, and I struggle to find a balance. I tend to either have my phone in hand and photograph everything, or I completely forget to take a picture at all. I'd like to find myself somewhere in between those extremes.

  7. Having that photo archive is one of the reasons I enjoy blogging so much - it's wonderful to have a record of things like that. I am an avid picture taker (especially on trips) and actually still get most of my photos developed and sort them into albums (not blog photos but all the rest of them).

  15. Such a super chic look dear! Love the floral top, while the faded denim jacket beautifully matches your shoes. And of course, you can't go wrong with white denims on this one.

  17. First, I love your outfit with the pretty floral top and white jeans!

Secondly, I'm the same with photos. I like having photos to look back on to jog my memory of things. I can't wait until we have a proper house, as I'm going to be hanging photos up everywhere, haha! I have been staring at all the different frames when we pass by that section in stores. I am more excited about decorating with photos than I am with furniture!

Plus, since I can be a few weeks behind when I wore something and when I blog it, it's helpful to flick through my phone and remind myself what I did that day I wore that outfit, my memory isn't the best with sleep deprivation, ha!

Hope that you are having a great week so far :)

  18. I struggle with the idea of being in the moment or taking photos. I try to do both---take the photos, and then enjoy. I think photos have such a great gift to take us back to certain events and memories, so I hate to not take them!!
