2018 Goals

A chilly start to the new year, yesterday was spent mostly indoors enjoying too many leftover Christmas cookies.

A change in a calendar date doesn't typically carry much weight in my mind. I don't usually set resolutions, and when I have, they often get abandoned. This year however, I would like to set some goals for myself. I read a number of self-help books these past few months, and while none of them seemed to offer a clear cut instruction manual (wishful thinking), the overwhelming theme was that nothing will change until I change something.

This year I need to change my job. I need to work somewhere with opportunity for growth, and somewhere I can make enough money to live on my own. If I only change one thing this year, that needs to be it.

I'd also like to make a better effort to carve out more time to read. I think one book a month would be reasonable - I'm starting out with Aziz Ansari's "Modern Romance", and already have "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman waiting for me at the library, since a few bloggers I love recently recommended it.

The last goal I'd like to set for myself is to go to the gym twice a week. I was doing really well with that for about six months, but stopped with my recent address change. I have a membership to The Y, and the one here only offers 'my' class once a week instead of twice like the other did. Which means I'll have to try a new class, without the security blanket of my sister accompanying forcing me to go.

Hopefully I can work towards these goals this year, and maybe they will change and grow, and maybe the blog will change and grow... and maybe I will too. Thanks to all of you who commented on my last post, I literally got a little teary-eyed reading each one. You guys are the best. Thank you.

  1. I'll be honest - because I'm not sure I know how not to be ;) The biggest changes in my life and my level of contentment have come when I've left jobs where I felt unhappy or worse, trapped. Sometimes, the actual getting out of the job is a long, arduous process. But when everything comes together and it works, its such a positive thing. I hope 2018 will bring that change for you, and other positive changes, too.

  2. It can sometimes be super frustrating to look for work and switch jobs but I just know it will come together for you. My husband is about to embark on a job search himself (it'll be his big project when he goes on leave with Eleanor from March to June - he doesn't mind his current position but working 1-2 evenings a week and a few Saturdays and Sundays each month really minimizes the time he can spend with Eleanor) and I know it will probably result in a lot of rejection but that, with time, something great will come along and he just needs to stay focused on the ultimate goal. I'm sure you'll find something that's perfect for you!

  3. I like that these goals are attainable! However the job thing does suck because I had to make that leap from barely making it job to one that allowed me to live on my own! But a new year is full of promise and keep us posted!

  5. It sounds like you're on track for a successful 2018! Sometimes you just need that really shitty moment (or year) as a wake-up call to help the future fall into place. xoxo

  9. At least you have good rationale for your changes, and they are realistic. I don't know why change is so hard for all of us, yet sometimes the best thing ever. I remember when I said I'd never move from my house (because it was so stressful), yet the best thing we did 2 years ago was downsize, and I couldn't be happier.
I wish you all the luck in these next days, months and years, Lydia!! We are only a word away!!!

  10. First, love your cute beanie with this outfit! :)

Second, what great goals for the year! I'm trying to read more this year too, I've been trying to do it for a few months. I don't think I could do a book a month, btu I have a few things I want to read so I'm hoping I get the opportunity this year, I'm trying to set aside a chapter a night before bed and it seems to be working so far! :)

Good luck with the job hunt! It can be difficult but it's so rewarding when you find the one you love! :)

Happy new year! Hope that 2018 has started nicely for you! Mine has been so enjoyable as I'm still on leave from work so I'm taking the opportunity to relax!

  14. It can be really demoralizing when a job isn't fulfilling (or is super stressful) because we spend SO much of our lives at work. Sending you all the good vibes you find something new + fast! :)

  15. I read you Goodbye 2017 post and got teary eyed. I had no idea that you have been having a rough time and going through a break-up. I'm so sorry Lydia, these things are so difficult to open up about and thank you for putting it out there. Often when we do this, we help others who may be experiencing the same things. I'm hoping this year is a great one for you, and us all :)

  16. When we trip, we can only get up ;)
I think its good you are setting attainable goals, I never set yearly goals as I am always afraid I will not meet them... or that I will make myself accountable as I have done before.
For example years ago we bought a 1800's house and I wanted to restore it and celebrate my 40th birthday there. I was so angry we could not do this that I decided to not celebrate my birthday at all. Nothing. I was disappointed I was not able to reach that goal. So now I do not set a date for them.
OMG I have been seeing the news and you must be freezing, but as usual in stye my friend.
