Stuffing

This weekend I finally stared to deal with my over-stuffed closet issue. I often have these grand ideas that I'm just going to pick a day and go through everything with a lot of tough love, and end up with this radical closet overhaul; but somehow I doubt that will ever happen.

Instead, I challenged myself to take out 20 things. I managed 17.

There is a lot I haven't really been wearing, but I'm just not yet ready to part with. I can't quite explain these mental blocks and weird emotional attachments I have towards a blazer I thrifted but only wore twice, a skirt that is really too short, and something I needed to alter three years ago and still haven't yet.

But I'm trying, and doing a little at a time.

Not helping the cause at all - this weekend I bought two skirts, a pair of boots, and a pair of gloves.
The only really justifiable item being the gloves - I needed a pair of black iPhone gloves, since my pink ones don't go with any of my coats.

I get what you mean. I have slowly been getting rid of things in my closet, but it's hard. Maybe if you tuck those things away in a storage tote, you may realize you don't need them or find a fresh way to wear them again? I love the leopard and yellow. Well, anything leopard is awesome :) Heather

I'm also terrible at getting rid of things. When I organized my jewelry, I vowed to get rid of anything that I didn't love. I got rid of two items. I usually toss the iffy pieces in a storage bin and tuck them away for awhile before donating them. Baby steps.

I've never been good at getting rid of clothes either, I always fear I'll regret giving something away. But since I've lived where I live now I have to do more closet purging simply because of a serious lack of space! Oh man that skirt you got though--gorgeous! I'm sure you'll get tons of wear out of it!

What I fabulous skirt!

I have trouble getting rid of things too. I have a drawer full of clothes that don't even fit. I get sentimental about clothes and I am optimistic I might be able to fit into them again someday.

I have problems parting with items as well so I usually opt to take things out of my closet and put them in a box and then wait 6 months and go through the box. Somethings go back into the closet but most go to friends and charity.

Aaaah this entire post is me, Lyddie!! haha, I can't stand ot part with my clothes.. because.. because what if? Even if I "replace" an old red jacket with a new one, what if I need that old one. WHAT IF?!

It's hard, and the fact that you even got 17 things (damn girl) out of your closet is inspiring, at least to me. :)

Your yellow skirt is so pretty! And it looks so nice with that sharp leather jacket.

that leather jacket is awesome! cleaning out a closet can definitely be a chore. don't let go of anything you're unwilling to part with. only part with it when you're ready. but do embrace new things by getting rid of at least one thing. hahaha what a hard balance!

LOVE your leather jacket! Cleaning out a closet is so difficult, I know! That's great you found 17 pieces to get rid of. I could probably only find 5 : (.

I'm awful at getting rid of clothes. I've been really trying to do the one in, one out policy. For some reason choosing one piece to donate is much easier than doing a big purge. (I also don't include accessories in this policy since they don't take up as much room :) )

Nnenna said...

I need to do another closet overhaul as well! I too am holding on to things that I really should just donate, but it's hard to let go!

Girl if you find a magic formula for this, please tell me. I have the same issue all the time. I think I just need to invest in a bigger closet . . . like every year. I really love your yellow skirt with the leather jacket and animal print! Very edgy yet classy combo!

17 items gone is a good start!. I finally got rid of all the pre preggo clothes that will never fit again and now I feel so much better about my closet! That leather jacket is fabulous!!

first off, love your skirt to pieces! The bold yellow hue is gorgeous. secondly, 17 items is a giant step in the right direction. I have that same weird emotional attachment to clothes that I hardly ever wear. I just keep thinking that maybe one day I'm gonna need that neon bomber jacket....

WOW, congrats on finding 17 pieces that you're willing to let go, that's a huge step! I'm just terrible at getting rid of things from my closet!

I love how you paired this yellow skirt with leopard and a leather jacket, the contrast is really interesting and chic!

this outfit is terrific! i love the black leather coat addition. i think you have trouble throwing things out because you are so good at mixing and matching things that you can see the potential in everything!

I'm totally on the same page with you. My closet is just buuuurrrsting, and yet I can't seem to get rid of many things. Some days I feel very motivated and take out a bunch of stuff, but other days I can't seem to part with any of it... haha. Congrats on taking out 17 things, that is fantastic! You look so chic btw, love how you added the yellow skirt.

I always have a closet issue - way too much clothes and shoes. I think I go thrifting way too many times and don't get a chance to wear what I've bought or plan to re-fashion.

Ashley J said...

My husband challenged me to do that with my shoes recently! He said take out 20 pairs and I managed 15- we both did good!!!

Lyddie...i do love this outfit and that jacket.
I have a hard time sometimes with overstuffing the closet and then purging, but when I do purge I have no mercy. I've never regretted a purge.
17 is a good start...good for you!

I really love that jacket, it is such a great piece! I have trouble parting with items too...there are many things I have that it is probably time to get rid of :)

My closet is definitely overstuffed, and I've already weeded things out a few times this fall. I don't know what else to get rid of! I can't take more things out, but at the same time, I know I only wear about half of what's in my closet regularly, and haven't worn a lot of what's in there in months. Maybe your closet purge can push me.

Also, LOVE yellow and leopard together!

Ahhh those glitter boots! So cute and an amazing price. Hooray for leopard! I'm missing my leopard things, all stuck in my apartment :(

Oh, the closet overhaul... I completely sympathise. I had to clear out a lot of stuff before we moved because we basically lost half of our apartment space when we moved to Paris... And yet, I got here, and I look at many of the things I brought and wonder, why? Why did I keep that, of all things? But still, I can't make myself get rid of it! On an outfit-related note, I'm loving this combination of black, yellow and brown. It suits your colouring beautifully!

I so know what you mean about weird attachments towards clothes, I have a tee shirt from middle school that I still can't get rid off, the list just goes on and on. :P Good luck in your closet clean out and gloves are always completely justifiable!
I love the black leather jacket with the bright yellow skirt, it is so bright and bold, perfect for wintertime.

Loving your bright mustard skirt, and relating to the difficulty parting with clothes. I think I'm doing better these days, but I wish I could edit my closet a little more seriously.

Way to go, getting rid of 17 things! What normally happens when I try to clean out my closet is that I put about 10 things in a bag to take to my parents' house for next year's garage sale, and then the next year, when we're getting everything ready for the garage sale, I see all those old clothes and realize how awesome they were, and take them back :)

I really love the pairing of leopard and yellow here! I seriously purged my closet in the summer before moving to Alaska and, while I feel mostly happy with the results, sometimes I find myself yearning for a piece I parted with.
