Dysfunctional Rationalization

I've always prided myself on shopping for deals, a near outright refusal to pay full price for something. Admittedly though, I often lose touch with sensibility when I say, find a skirt with an MSRP of $88 at TJMaxx (linking Marshalls because they still have some in stock) on clearance for $10 and I feel like I've just saved $78. Not that I would have ever paid that, and really I only saved $10 since the original TJMaxx price was $20. However Gilt is selling it for $50, which kind of means I saved $40. Therefore, when I buy a pair of sunglasses for $80, I like to apply that imaginary $40 as a discount. Since the sunglasses were originally $190... well you know where I'm going with that; how could I not justify $140 sandals? (Marked down from $169 of course!)

I'm pretty sure this is how Kohl's entire business model works, and I feel too savvy to fall for their savings gimmicks, yet I still manage to fall for my own.

  1. Gotta love rationalization. I do that all the time too even though i also rarely buy retail (unless it’s something that never goes on sale)
Those shoes are so fun, I love the gold detailing

  2. That rationalization seems more than sound to me - and you've found some truly amazing deals along the way...

  4. That skirt looks beautiful on you and I like the mix of neutrals in this outfit! :)

I always avoid paying retail but I am sure I've been sucked in by the "only $X" thinking before, haha! I'm trying to be stricter with what I buy but when it comes to the kids....I have to unsubscribe from the emails or I will spend $60 on clothes to get a $10 discount, haha! Too easy to justify buying more clothes for them if they are on sale ;)

Hope that your week is going well :)

  5. There is something so satisfying about feeling like we've outsmarted anyone - but especially discount retailers. The problem is, we often don't realise we have our own tricks that we do fall for, even if theirs don't work. I know this about myself, but have never yet managed to outsmart myself. Maybe one day...? Also I love this outfit because I'm pretty sure I own all the pieces (or at least close approximations of them) and wore something similar in Greece last year and so you've taken me right back there, which is the closest I'm getting to actually going there for the foreseeable future :(
