Between Sun and Rain

“If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” - Mark Twain

Over the weekend I found myself in Hartford for brunch at The Place 2 Be, and I happened to notice (check posts on Instagram) that the cherry blossoms in Bushnell Park were starting to bloom. Since I'm not typically in the area I didn't want to miss an opportunity to catch the blooms in the gorgeous park.

After a brief taste of sunny skies, the weather had reverted back to gloom, and on this particular day, it couldn't seem to decide if the sun or the rain was going to win out. Since I couldn't convince any of my fellow brunchers to accompany me to the park, I was solo with the tripod. Almost as soon as I had my shot set up the rain started. Nothing torrential, so I thought I could just keep shooting, but as rain drops fell on my lens they confused the auto focus so much that none of my shots were anything but a blurry mess.

Even as the rain was falling I could see the sun trying to break through, so I waited out the rain, dried off my lens and tried again. With the clouds moving and light constantly shifting it made for a bit of a challenge, and just when I thought I'd found a sweet spot, the wind kicked up. Frustrated, I retreated to my car, reviewed what I'd gotten, and decided it was enough to call it day. Even though I would have loved to have spent more time exploring the park and snapping away among the blooms, the crazy weather was more than I could handle, and I don't like risking a strong wind toppling my tripod, which has happened in the past.

They might not be 100% the photos I'd hoped for, but I gave it my best, and I suppose there is always next year!

  1. Super pretty! I love the shot of the bag!! You did well considering the on and off sprinkles.
It's a shame I had to be super quick with my own photos to make it to my other weekend plans.

  2. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!! Cherry blossoms make everything better!

    xoxo Sarah

  3. I think the shots turned out really pretty- but I totally know the struggle of trying to battle the weather during a shoot. Last weekend it was bright outside and warm, but the wind was CRAZY. 40 mph gusts, even in the spot where we were tucked behind this building. It was so hard to get in the groove when we had to stop every few seconds and wait for the wind to settle, lol.

  4. The photos are beautiful!! I love your outfit too, especially that cute leopard top!

  5. These pictures make me happy. Though the weather in north east is so random. I struggle with outfit shoots 90% of the year. :)

  6. See, if you hadn't said anything I never would have thought for even a second that these photos weren't 100% perfect (and I remain convinced that they basically are, actually). Seeing these makes me miss cherry blossoms so much!

  7. Those blooms are beautiful and I really like your purse. Trying to be practical and not buying any more until I know which I want to keep in my closet though!

  8. Love this cute spring look. Your handbag is fabulous!!

  9. That tree is everything! So beautiful - perfect backdrop! Love your adorable handbag!

  10. I used to attempt the tripod when I first started my blog 8 years ago and the photos were TRAGIC. IF they looked like this I would've been WAY ahead of the game. These photos turned out great!

    cute & little

  13. Your pictures are full of freshness and of course boasting the true beauty of spring. Loved the all.

  14. Beautiful. Spring brings forth the crisp air, emerging greenery and Cherry Blossoms

  15. These are such beautiful pictures! It looks like you got great pictures despite the weather being against you. The blossoms look so pretty.

  16. I would have never guessed it was so difficult to get these shots, you make it look so easy and they look really good.

  17. I think you did really well and the cherry blossoms look beautiful! :) I find photos with my tripod tricky enough when I take them in the same place every day so I have much admiration for people who are able to take them in a different spot with all of the different things to consider, particularly the weather as you mentioned!

Hope that you are having a lovely weekend! We are off to a wedding! :)

  18. I wish we had these lovely cherry blossom trees here in St. Louis!! Sooo beautiful! I love that leopard top and that detail shot of your round bag really shows it off!

  19. I take all of my photos with a tripod but rarely venture out of my backyard. I think your photos look great and the cherry blossoms are beautiful! Your leopard top is super cute!

  20. I love this so much, especially your bag!

  21. The kind of spring day you're describing sounds entirely too familiar - only here, we have no lovely cherry blossoms to perk them up, just grey skies with intermittent moments of sun. But, fingers crossed the forecast is right and the clouds are finally going to break later this week. In the meantime, I must admit that even without the sun, these blooms just look so lovely. And I love your outfit, too. Although I have a drawer full of blue jeans, I somehow feel that I need the pair you're wearing, too ;)

  22. This is such a cute outfit! I love the bag. I can't believe all of these are with a tripod!
