Trolley from Market Street to Hyde Street

It was good to be away, and it's good to be back.
It's hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that we are now nearly three weeks into June, like time should have stopped passing while I was away, yet thinking back to the first day in San Francisco feels like forever ago.

The time difference between the coasts is tough - at least in California it could be used to advantageously avoid lines at popular breakfast places, since I was wide awake at 6 a.m. This past weekend however, I felt like I had lead weights attached to my eyelids if I tried to get up before noon and falling asleep earlier than 3 a.m. was challenging.

San Francisco was one of the destinations I was most looking forward to - the iconic landmarks, the trolley, the homes built into the steepest of hills I could never fathom living in and ever being able to leave the house in heels.

For our first day there, we headed to the Trolley. The lines were long and slow moving, but we rode it twice anyway, as the place we were staying was only a few minutes from the Market Street station, and was the most direct, and fun way to get down to Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square.

The Ghirardelli ice cream shop is not to be missed - sundaes are pricey ($14) but big enough to be shared and I made sure to scrape every last bit of the fudge sauce out of the dish. I also enjoyed the seals at Pier 39.

The weather in San Francisco was confusing - we unknowingly scheduled our trip just in time for June Gloom, which we did not know about prior to our arrival and it haunted us for nearly every day we were in California - but San Francisco had the most unpredictable weather, and I think it's best described by what I saw one woman wearing: summer dress under a winter coat.

  1. I didn't know that June Gloom was a thing, but we're definitely just coming out of it here in Vancouver - after a beautiful spring, we've had two weeks of cold, rain and grey. I'm packing all the layers from San Francisco because I feel like it's the only sensible thing to do, dressing on the West Coast is no easy feat because the weather can change every fives minutes. It looks like you got these shots at a particular beautiful time, though, and I love seeing those nude lace up flats being put to such good use!

  3. I've heard of Grey May before but I didn't know about June Gloom! That's very annoying to arrive somewhere and think that you have the right clothes and then you don't! Oh well, maybe it's the world saying it's a chance to shop?

  5. You were certainly a well dressed tourist.
Looks like you hit all the "musts" - I skipped the Ghirardelli ice cream, but I cannot recall why.

  16. Summer dress under a winter coat... :) Ha, now that sounds interesting! I bet it can be super cold in the mornings and hot in the afternoons, though. I can think of a few times when I was up north when it was like that and I was changing clothes throughout the day. These photos are top notch gorgeous, and I love that bag so much.

  17. I've never been to CA but have always wanted to go, so I love seeing your pics and hearing about the trip! I can't even imagine the exhaustion from traveling from one coast to another though!! I love this cute, laid-back look--the print of that blouse is so pretty!
