Reservations

New Year's Eve is rapidly approaching, and this year I am determined to break my running tradition of staying home and falling asleep on the couch by 10 pm. I bought a turquoise sequined dress no fewer than four years ago with the intent of wearing it on NYE and it's still hanging in the closet unworn. I'm not even sure if I like it anymore.

Last year, even though Sean and I were seeing each other, he was working and I couched it. This year he is working again and I decided I want to just go to the restaurant he works at; have dinner, hang out, steal a kiss a midnight - seems pretty feasible.

The only caveat is that for New Year's Eve it will cost me $248 to get a table. Part of me has rationalized that since I haven't been out in years it's just something I need to do. Another part of me can only think about boots I would rather spend $250 on. Then there is the worry that since I'm shy and I will essentially be there alone, that I wont have fun. And part of me is saying, "Book the damn reservation", thus forcing me to commit, because there is a $125 cancellation fee.
Holiday problems.

What are your New Year's Eve plans?

  6. Loving this look! That leopard skirt is so cute and the color of that jacket is perfection! That is kind of a tough dilemma on NYE...I wouldn't know what to do either! We don't really do much NYE, but I always stay awake until at least midnight.

  9. Those boots will not be half as much as the GREAT memory of being with Sean for 2015. Happy New Year.

  10. I love your jacket, sweater and skirt Lydia! It looks so good together. New Year's Eve Festivities are so expensive. HaHaHa I say hold onto the money and use it when you two can celebrate together (Valentine's Day) or put towards a trip together.

  11. First of all--oh yay!!! You moved the comment thing to the bottom of your page! So much easier! Second of all--Patrick and I have been doing the same him-hawing over going out or not for a week or so. I haven't been out for a NYE since before I became a mom I think! Maybe it's time to go out and do something for a change. Third--I love this outfit. The jacket is amazing and I love the skirt too! I hope whatever you chose you have fun! The boots would be amazing, but the night might be one that you never forget!

  12. Holy god, that's pricey! I don't blame you for having reservations! I personally think NYE is a bit over-rated. I've always spent it hanging with friends and playing board games or going to see bands. This year I've got tickets to see a band and, now that I have my license, I'll be the designated driver. So it'll be a pretty low key night for me. The only problem is that I've got a wicked head cold and feel awful so I may scrap my plans and nap on the couch instead...

  13. Mmmmm decisions, decisions.
I am sure you can find a better way to spend that much money!
At the end, its just a celebration we make up ..
When I was in my early twenties I would get home on the first of January after having breakfast… however now I am not interested in going out and I really don't miss it. If its not you - skip it and get the boots or whatever you fancy.

  15. First, I love how you styled that dress. Very chic. Second, that's such an expensive investment for a table. It might be worth it to be with Sean though!

  16. You look stunning, Lydia! I need to check out Wallis again, haven't done so for a while.
I don't have any plans for NYE and will stay on the couch... given the fact that we are snowed in, it is the safer option this year anyway!!

  17. Oh my - talk about reservations in more ways than one! I just have to make a small side note here because you mentioned that Sean works in a restaurant - have you found yourself a chef? If so, well done! In all seriousness, though, I think what you do for NYE really has to depend on what makes you happy. I think a lot of people feel pressure to celebrate NYE because it's NYE, and wind up not really enjoying what they do because they're celebrating for the sake of it. I've been couching it for years and honestly, it's what makes me happiest. Granted, people occasionally raise their eyebrows when I tell them how I spent the evening, but other people's opinions don't matter much. This year, it will be me, my BFFFFF, his two couches, a few bottles of wine and a lot of junk food in front of the TV. We will probably fall asleep at 10, and one of us may wake up for midnight. We'll see. Long and short of it is, spend NYE however will make you happiest, regardless of the price tag. (Although I really do get the hesitation over a cost like that - it must be a pretty amazing restaurant.)

  18. First of all, there is no way I would pay that much… I would so rather have shoes! Can't your BF get you in? Of course, I am not one to talk because I am so not a go out on NYE type (or any other night, thank you very much). I will once again be spending NYE in my jammies and probably be asleep long before midnight.
With all of that being said, I love that dress! So adorable. And the leather jacket looks fab.

  21. New Year's Eve isn't all it's cracked up to be, in my opinion. I still love going out and stealing a kiss from my husband on that day but really, it's all about what you make it! Just decide to have fun and go with it :)

  22. That is such a pretty dress! Love the print!

I understand your predicament! I want to say go out and wear the dress, but that is a lot of money for a table. You're sure to have fun though with everyone in a celebratory mood :)

We will be having a quiet new years watching the fireworks on TV I suspect. I'm not good with crowds, so we catch an early fireworks show if we go to one at all, and then spend the evening at home making plans for the next year. All the hubbub can be quite overrated sometimes!

However you spend it, I hope you have a lovely new year.

  23. Totally been in that situation quite a few times before. I always tend to lean more towards spending the money on something else, but that's after tons of thinking and rationalization. I am sure you will have fun whichever way you decide. I bet that dress is fab as well!
Love your outfit. The print is so fun and I loveee that leather jacket you are wearing. It is so beautiful! Good luck with your decision and enjoy your new year!

  24. That is a tough decision. I think I would rather buy some nice shoes and spend another day with your honey on something nice. I personally think going out eat on NYE is way over rated - food is usually pre fixe which I am not a fan of and I always feel too rush.

I think that's just the old lady in me that prefers to be in the comfort of my home and pajamas.

  25. You get out there and get your NYE kiss, haha! Although I can understand not wanting to drop the cash for a table- NYE is soooo expensive!

NYE is also my birthday, so I've got some major dinner + champagne plans with friends and fam. :)

I say go for it this NYE, especially if you get to steal some moments with Sean. Those parties really can be pricey though!

  28. I need this sweater in my life! I might have to go to Target and check out the one you linked. I love this look and have been obsessing over cowneck sweaters in grey and camel lately. Total bummer that you guy works on NYE. What a dilemma. I would totally be in the same position you are and am therefor no help!

  30. I totally understand the NYE problem. It's actually my least favorite holiday. I never go anywhere. I would love to go to a fancy party and dress up but tickets usually are so expensive.
I love that skirt/dress! I just bought a similar skirt so I'm totally going to steal this outfit idea!
