Polka Dots in the Yale Art Gallery

Edit - The Haven Collective is now Vintanthromodern!

This week I'm collaborating with the New Haven based vintage shop The Haven Collective. I've borrowed some of my favorite pieces and photographed them throughout the city of New Haven. Be sure and check out Monday'sTuesday's, and Wednesday's posts as well!

At first glance, it's just a polka dot. Take a closer look and you will see there are actually little flowers inside each dot. This fun little print mix almost seems like something you'd find on a square of a patchwork quilt, yet completely works in the form of a floaty chiffon midi skirt.

One of the best things about The Yale Art Gallery is that it's free, which means you can stop in any time you'd like, for an hour, or for an afternoon. The last time I was in the Yale Art Gallery the sculpture garden was closed due to excessive snow, but I was happy to see that the garden is resilient; even though it seemed unimaginable, the snow melted and the tulips came back.

Old things return, much like these vintage pieces, finding a new purpose in modern times. The midi skirt became mini, and maxi, and now is back again, and being paired with another one of my favorite thrift finds - a lace top that I stripped of it's lining and shortened it's sleeves. While both these pieces are quite similar to things you can find in Nordstrom right now, what sets them apart are the unique details which make them one of a kind.

  2. I want to get excited about those polkadots. I really do. But I am way too distracted by the fabulousness of that sheer crocheted top. What an absolutely stunning piece! You wear it beautifully - and I can't think of a more picturesque place for it to be shown off than the garden at the Yale Art Gallery. (Which, by the way, is free? I'm so envious. The art gallery here costs over $20 and there's hardly even any art in it!)

  7. That skirt is so fun! Reminds me a bit of the Jason Wu for Target pinwheel print, polka dots from far away but as you get close you see the detail :)

  9. I love these two items combined--it's such a feminine, romantic look, but the clutch and shoes keep it modern. The setting is so perfect for this look too, you always have such a way of making your setting fit what you're wearing perfectly!

  13. That is a lovely mid skirt, I like the print of it paired with the lace top. :)

It's nice how vintage or thrifted pieces can easily be reworked into a modern outfit - I guess it helps that fashion works in cycles haha.
