Trying Not to Shop

If there is one thing there is no shortage of in Los Angeles, it's places to shop. There is temptation around every corner, and unlike the shopping malls in Connecticut, everything here is open to the outdoors, at this spot there were fire pits with rocking chairs, and a fun wall to use as my backdrop for outfit photos.

As inviting as it was, I'm trying very hard to not shop much this year. I know I have too much. Trying to pack for this trip was a pretty good reality check. Finding things with tags still on from months ago, realizing I probably own 50 pounds of jeans alone, struggling to get my suitcase under weight (it ended up being three pounds over and by some grace they let me go without having to pay extra) and contemplating if three leather jackets would be too many. (I ended up with one, but haven't worn it yet since it's been raining so much).

All this to say, I can't keep up my usual shopping habits, especially as long as I'm in L.A., because I'm going to eventually have to get it all home again.

  1. I've been working really hard not to shop so much this year, as well. After years of being pretty disciplined in my shopping habits, mainly due to total lack of space in my home, I really let lose on my purse strings last year. I was feeling a lot more inspired by fashion, but also just found myself with so much more storage that shopping as much as I wanted seemed perfectly acceptable because there was always somewhere to store my new things. Now that I've filled a significant amount of space, and still find myself acquiring pieces I don't wear for long, I've realised that I have to get back to reality. I've been responsible so far this year, and only bought skincare products I actually needed. But every day is a new struggle, and I can't imagine how much harder it would be if I were in LA! Luckily, you already have a fabulous wardrobe. Everything about this look is so perfect, I would very happily steal all the pieces from you :)

  2. Ooooh I love that cardigan!!! And yea, this year I really have to stop the shopping since money is starting to get tight around here.
Doing a poor job of that this month if you look at the money I spent, but luckily it was gift cards, paypal money and Christmas money so it doesn't reaaaallly count (but it does, haha) I guess this is the month where I'll get all my shopping out of the way ;)

  4. The temptation to shop is SO real! I took a break from buying anything since the holidays, and it felt great. Love your cute casual look!

  5. I always find it really hard to change shopping habits, personally. Like you, I have so many things in my closet that I just don't wear and yet I keep making purchases (sometimes even getting things very similar to what I already have and haven't worn). It's absolutely something I need to work on...

  6. Loving this cardigan and I'm on the same boat. My goal is to not shop at all for the next two months. Exception can be made if I get a gift card. Surprisingly I wasn't really tempted in LA I think mostly because I have all the things I need. It would be cool if I didn't shop the entire year but not sure about that yet lol. Good Luck lady.

  7. I love that mustard top and the cardi looks so cosy! :)

It's so hard trying not to shop in January, especially with the sales everywhere, and the temptation of shopping in new places just because you are on holiday! At least you know any bargains you find wouldn't be completely bargains as you might have to pay extra on the way home if your case is heavier! That's a good way to avoid shopping, haha!

Hope that your week is going well! We are in the middle of another summer heatwave here in Australia!

  8. It's so hard not to shop when you are visiting somewhere. That is one of my favorite things to do and bring home clothes instead of a souvenir. Good luck with it all! I know I have too many sweaters, but with our cold weather, many I just can't part with.

  14. It's hard for me too. I still don't think I've gone a whole month without getting something. But I think I'm getting a little better...maybe?

  15. I love this look on you -- especially that pretty top!

I'm also with you on having too much stuff. I need to do a closet clean out soon, which is always a stark reminder of how much stuff I shouldn't have purchased in the first place. I have a handful of things that I wore only once or twice and realized I wasn't crazy about. I've been holding onto them out of guilt, but I need to just let them go and start fresh this year with a more disciplined approach to what goes in my closet.

  18. I am definitely in a slow-down no-shop period right now after moving- I purged so much and I STILL have so much stuff! Time to edit, edit, edit.

  23. I'm sure it's hard not to shop in a place where you're surrounded by great stores--but you can do it!! I love this look. Those jeans are so perfect with the flats so the fun hem can show, and I love the color of the top. I hope you're having a great time in LA!

  25. As I did a yearly 2018 recap I looked at the 2017 recap. I mentioned that I would do a shopping ban with you... and it seems that we never did :( At this point like you, I am way too ware of having too much. In fact, in addition to my walk in closet i have another closet in a room that is used as a home office. Or at least it was. Last night when I walked in there I flipped. The closet is full to the max and all chairs are covered in clothing. There is a clothes horse also packed. Bags everywhere....

  26. Shopping ban is too tough on me. But this year I decided to keep my closet clothing amount constant so if I get to buy something I give something else away.
