Hemming and Hawing (and a giveaway!)

First, the hemming.
You'd have to be the most dedicated blog reader ever to recognize this dress. I purchased it in February -- 2009. I paid $19 for it and haven't worn it yet. I actually put it on once last summer, with my highest heels and then someone asked me if I was going to my first communion and I went and changed.

Sadly, with this hemline, I couldn't help but to agree. I took the dress off and stuck it on a to-do list in my mind, and then ignored it.

I finally decided to hem the dress today. I put it on, I measured, I cut, I put it on again.
I measured wrong. I didn't leave myself enough allowance for the 3/4" rolled hem. Welcome to the most microscopic rolled hem ever. It took me a while, but I did it.

Now the Hawing.

Jeffrey Campbell Splendid sandals. After seeing about a million (okay, three) bloggers wearing them I developed a huge crush. I need these sandals. But they are $115 at Sole Struck, and as far as I can tell, the cheapest place to find a size 8.

If I were a size 10 or 11, I'd be all set, Nordstrom has them in for half off.

I set about finding a cheaper alternative. Here is what I've found:

Aldo, Bigelow $50
Leather, studded, faux wood heel.

Nine West, Big Baby $50
Patent, no studs, cork heel.

French Connection, Jezabel $60
Leather, no studs, wood heel. Slightly different in design.

Sigh. I need help. Damn insatiable shoe lust. I don't want to spend $115 on one pair of shoes. But I'm not completely enamored with my alternate finds, and they aren't even that cheap! (where are the $30 shoes please?) Anyone know where I can find them for less? Or where there is a better alternative?

And now...the Giveaway!!!

The lace jewelry I made last week needs a good home. The winner will get to choose any two pieces they'd like!
To enter, be a follower, and leave a comment with an email address so I can contact you if you win!

  3. I love the way you hemmed the dress - looks great!

I am not a good bargain hunter for shoes...sometimes I think spending a bit extra $$ for something your love is much better than settling for something that you don't, especially if they aren't even that cheap. Sorry to be an enabler!

    I am a follower...love the jewelery!

Also, good job on the hemming! I imagine a rolled hem is hard? It sounds like it is anyway.

  14. The dress is gorgeous, I actually really like the longer length but the short is cute too!

I may actually be able to help you with the shoes - I was about to list a pair on ebay that are quite similar to the Jeffery Campbell ones...they are an Australian size 8 (approximately a Euro 38?), I can email you some photos if you'd like?

  15. I agree with the other blogger, the dress is so Marylin Monroe, how are you going to style it? By the way I love the JC shoes the best, the other options don't even come close to the real thing, it's frustrating when you want a pair of shoes and wish someone could male a good look-alike shoe!

I think the white dress is great! If you are worried about the hem length you could always add some fabric or lace (perhaps in a fun color?) to the bottom to slightly lengthen.

  19. I think the dress hemmed looks great! White dresses are always so versatile!

Love the lace jewelry too, so interesting and lovely!

  31. I'm totally with you. I ALWAYS buy things and then I forget about them. But then I eventually remember them. And wear them. And it's all awesome and good.

You look fantastic! It really suits you and I love the colour. Kind of reminds me of a classier version of the classic Marilyn Monroe dress!

  39. Well, I hope this comment goes through! The first picture of the longer version of the dress actually looks like Marilyn Monroe's famous dress vs a First Communion dress! What a funny story, though. My first communion dress was so stuffy and ugly... It was nothing like that dress! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. i love that dress shortened! and i adore those shoes as well! i'm obsessed and nothing ever compares to the original :P
