Rocksbox

These days, you can rent anything. I rent my movies from Netflix, and I'm perfectly happy to never buy a video again. I rent my music from Spotify, and while at first I was skeptical, thinking I would always want to own my music, it wasn't long before I was won over.

Renting fashion isn't new either - I think we all remember the big plug for Bag, Borrow, or Steal in the Sex and the City Movie, when Carrie's assistant reveals that her never ending rotation of designer bags are in fact rentals.

Rocksbox is a rental service for jewelry, however unlike many other rental services, rather than choosing which pieces you receive, you fill out a style profile, are matched with a stylist, and hand-selected pieces are chosen for you.

The service is $19 a month, and provides three pieces of jewelry at a time. You can wear them for as long as you like, and if you become smitten with something and don't want to mail it back it's simply charged to your credit card at 20% off list price.

My first box included a bracelet from Margaret Elizabeth with a discounted price of $70, a pair of geometric earrings from Urban Gem, priced at $32 and a necklace from Gorjana, priced at $52.

Of the three pieces, I like the bracelet, but I certainly don't $70 like it. I'm not partial to the earrings at all, they were too heavy and I never wore them. However, I love the necklace (it was actually one I picked while filling out my style profile). Gorjana pieces are 18k gold plated, and I have a couple so I can honestly say they hold up, but at the end of the day, I'm going to send the necklace back, and perhaps just add it to my Christmas wish list.

Rocksbox is offering me three months free to try out their service, and I'm still undecided if this is something I would continue to use after the trial. On the one hand, my jewelry box is over run with trendy statement necklaces, on the other, I LOVE buying jewelry. I think I will finish out the trial before making my final decision.

  1. You're certainly getting lots of use out of that jacket!
And yea, I'm not sure I would want to use that site. I want to be able to pick the pieces I get. What if I never like anything they send? I'm very picky, ha ha

  8. I am not really a jewelry person in that it's not what I first think of or are attracted to when I shop. So I don't have very much of it. Something like this would be perfect! I love this outfit on you Lydia! Simple and chic!

  13. I love the idea of RocksBox but at the same time, the lack of instant gratification would probably really put me off in the end. That or I'd end up buying everything in every box that came because I wouldn't want to send it back. Although the concept is clever, I can't see it being for me. I do love that Margaret Elizabeth bracelet, though, and the necklace, too - they both work so seamlessly into this look which, frankly, I'm contemplating recreating as I type this, because it's lovely :)

  15. I know you've said this to me, but we definitely have the same opinion on renting clothing or accessories. I think there is just a greedy part of me that wants the item to be all mine!

  16. Fun idea for a rental service, as jewellery can get so messy when you start to keep a lot of it! :) That necklace is very pretty :)

  19. I love hearing about these type of services.
Unfortunately for me anything that involves the mail service is not an option. Maybe someday the mail will work here!

  20. I love the bracelet and necklace tons! Very great pieces. They suit you well. I keep hem-hawing about rocksbox. It's a great concept, but I hang on to most of my jewels and wear them for a long time. I would be scared to fall in love with an entire box because while one piece might work with my budget, all three would definitely not.

  21. I just got my first Rocksbox and I am loving it so far! I don't own a ton of jewelry so it is fun for me to get to wear nice designer brands that I normally wouldn't!

  22. Looks like they have some great pics of jewelry. I am not a big fan of any subscription based services because I feel it's just throwing away money. The only rentals I do is Netflix. I have even made it to Spotify yet.

I would be curious to hear if you continue after the 3 months.

  23. It's totally normal to feel somewhat overwhelmed when there's a change in your schedule but sometimes adding more on your plate and knowing you have a bigger to do list will help you get things done more efficiently. Like right now I was just watching tv instead of being blogger productive and bumped into the show you were on so I came on here to catch up with you.

I always have so many blog ideas and topics that I do not get around to myself. Well, this weekend I released my blog on a new site! So, Lydia, I hope you continue to check me out on it and leave me your thoughts on my design.

Btw, I just moved my blog to http://www.apreponderanceoffashion.com
