Impulse

One of my resolutions this year was to try and limit my impulse purchases, and this weekend I found myself falling into impulse after impulse, and it got me wondering how one could ever even shop at all if they set out in search of one thing, and only purchased that one thing (assuming it can even be found) without suddenly desiring other things you encounter while you search.
Impulse

When I heard that J.Crew was having their extra 40% off clearance this weekend, without hesitation, I went to the page for the sequined striped tee. (the one I'd been pining for over the summer but was deterred by it's $72 price tag.) Reduced to $50 the extra 40% would make it $30 (not bad) but lo - the only size left was extra large (now completely sold out).

Later I found myself sniffing around the items I'd put on my Christmas wishlist but hadn't received. I went to check on a dolman sleeve sweater from The Limited which had been $50. Now it was $20, and I decided to look for a free shipping coupon, but found a way to get half off if you spent $50 instead. In search of a $30 item I found this striped sequin tee. Check out the comparison:
I couldn't tell them apart either.
After my discount and the shipping, my total was $34, so I'm just saying I spent $17 on each.

Later this weekend I found myself in TJMaxx and much like last year, I found piles of super cheap tights on clearance. I wasn't as committed to photographing them properly (like last year) so this little preview will have to suffice.
The first is a pair of socks, the rest are tights and they were made in Italy. I love things made in Italy. The total for the for pairs is $12.

Lastly, I was lured into the Gap by an extra 30% off your purchase sign and found this little dress, originally $60, reduced to $40, now $28. But I had $20 in gift certificates, so my total was $8!
Apologies for the iPhone photos!

So I have to wonder, and I have to ask: If you never made any impulse purchases, would you make any purchases at all?

  5. I love your pattern mixing here and the bright yellow contrast.

I'm thinking 90% of my purchases are impulse. Whenever I shop for something specific, I never seem to find it, but find other things instead. I try to keep a mental list of things I want to keep my eye out for...

  13. I am a bit of an impulse shopper too though I go shopping with an idea of what I want I tend to stray if something catches my eye. I think you got some great deals here.

  14. Ooh I've been stalking that striped tee too! You enabler you, I'm off to the Limited now.

I don't know if I'm a total impulse shopper. Whether it's $2 or $200, I really think about how much I'll wear something and if it fits in my wardrobe.

  15. Impulse purchases are totally justified when you score them at such steals! And high five on the sequin top! It does look just like the J.Crew version!

I was tempted by that darn 40% off too - but I purchased a slouchy boyfriend sweater. Hopefully it'll be as perfect in person as it was online. Fingers crossed.

  17. I love the striped tee, there is NO difference between the one from the Limited and the one from JCrew and we both know how I feel about tights but, I think my favorite is that dress!

I generally don't impulse buy because I don't have the financial wiggle room to do so. I plan and seach and save until I'm comfortable enough to shop. Then what happens is I wander around a store unable to commit to anything. It's really annoying.

  18. I'm also an impulse shopper. I find that I'm more impulsive around really good sales. The sale goes straight to my head and I run for the check out...

  21. Man, I am the WORST when it comes to impulse-shopping, and that's why I have resolved to not set foot in (unless it's for a client)Forever 21, Zara, or any new-clothing store where I generally go without a plan and leave with full bags of stuff I wear only a handful of times.

That said, I saw that dress you bought last week and selected it for a client because I think it will go with EVERYTHING and it's super flattering. And tights are always useful to have. I think you did a good job!

  25. Oooh great purchases! I think that impulse purchases are the best because that's how you get the best deals. If you never made impulse purchases everything would be pre-medidated and that's no fun!

  26. Sometimes you just have to seize the opportunity of great sales! It's a snag in good shopping resolutions, but I find that setting a monthly shopping budget for myself has helped curb the impulse buys for the most part.

    Great finds though!

  28. thats a great deal for those tights, i will have to pop into my local TJMaxx to see if i can find some similar goodies. i usually go shopping looking for something particular and come out with random things...impulse buys are hard to conquer

  29. tjmaxx has some great deals on tights; i can't imagine spending over $5 on a pair, they rip so easily!

  30. Impulse can be good sometimes, especially if the item you get is practical and timeless. I would say that of your purchases. And that's crazy, the striped sequin tops look completely identical!

Adore the animal print cardigan on you.

  33. Those are some serious deals! Especially the tights, totally jealous. All of my purchases today were impulse buys. I did actually make a list but since I couldn't find anything on it so I just bought some stuff I liked :) I love your grey and yellow outfit too, that's one of my favorite color combinations!

  34. Hmm, I may have to check out TJMaxx for the tights.

  35. I have a belief.. Impulse items that you love and will wear, when on deep discount (as long as you're not in the poor-house), are okay.. They are usually wardrobe builders or something with a wow-factor.

I think you found some great things at a great discount, so don't sweat it. Also, a lot of my impulse buys end up being things that I can list in my favorite items that I own.. :)

  37. How did I miss this on your blog? I saw it on Flickr but for some reason never caught up to it over here! I adore it and I'm adding a link to this post on my collection of animal print/stripes! Love it, especially because yours is the only example I've seen of a striped skirt with an animal print top - I've only seen it the other way around!
