It's so three years ago

The inspiration for this outfit comes from an old issue of Lucky Mag; I was searching my blog archives and came across this post where I'd scanned several pages with looks I wanted to recreate. The pink skirt and mint bag are spot on, but I toned it down a great deal with a less busy jacket, simpler shoe and more minimalist jewelry.

Make it count

It's June! The first month of summer, my favorite time of year. It always goes too fast, but I am determined to make the most of it this year. I still don't have a job, which has both it's cons as well as it's pros, and has helped me make the decision to take a shopping break this month. I made my last purchase of May a very good one though - a white leather mini satchel. It fills the Coach and Rebecca Minkoff shaped holes in my heart closet at a TJMaxx price. You'll see it later this week.

I think a break from shopping will be good for me, because while there will always be new things to want, I don't actually need anything. This summer I will be wearing a ton of white, and it is very well represented in my current wardrobe. I want to pare things down, clean out my closet again, and just embrace a simple summer style, with lots and lots of white.

Distressed

A pair of denim shorts was another item on my summer must-have list. I was loving those super distressed cutoffs, the ones with a solid half inch disintegrating at the hem, however the most important factor for me when buying shorts is that they not be tight on the thighs.

For anyone who is self conscious about their thighs, skin tight shorts are a recipe for disaster. Nothing makes me feel worse than sitting down in a pair of shorts like that.

Fortunately the boyfriend style is big right now, and Old Navy has these shorts in three different washes, all under $20. They leave the perfect amount of space between fabric and thigh, and I suppose if I were feeling ambitious, I could turn them into cutoffs. But the rolled hem is pretty cute too.

Printed pants + Chambray

These printed pants make me feel like I need to keep the rest of the outfit super casual. Thankfully it was just cool enough to get away with this chambray shirt, which is actually quite thick and generally can't be worn during the summer without overheating. (Which seems silly, because isn't that when you'd want to wear it the most?)

Elegantees

Elegantees is a company created by a woman with a vision, to make wearable, trendy, affordable clothing that is also modest; and a mission to help women who have been rescued from sex trafficking, and joining in the fight to end it.

They work with the Nepali Rescue Project and Restore NYC, creating fair trade sewing jobs for these women who are trying to get their lives back.

Elegantees is also working hard to raise awareness of this issue. It's easy to think of sex trafficking as being a problem in a third world country which you are far removed from, but the reality is that it is an international problem and the U.S. is the second highest destination for trafficked women.

I hope you will visit and support Elegantees, and find out what you can do to help fight sex trafficking.

Work wear / Summer flare

As long as it can be done without any possibility of midriff baring, I love knotting my button down shirts and pairing them with pencil skirts for work.

Of course I could just tuck it, and it would still look good, but there is something about that little knot that feels like summer, and just a little more carefree.

Shortcake

Strawberry shortcake at my towns annual festival is amazing. I look forward to it every year, and being able to enjoy a fresh, local summer fruit is a great way to start the season.

I did actually plan to wear this dress specifically to coordinate with my shortcake - that is how much I love it.

Savvy in my city

Summer. The days may be longer, but they always seem to fly by faster than any other time of the year. For me, summer is always about the dress - that perfect summer frock that is bright and fun which could go to brunch, or drinks, or even the office - and oh yes, needs to be affordable!

Fortunately London Times has a ton of stylish and versatile dresses aimed at the savvy shopper and they are launching their biggest giveaway yet, $1000 for your savviest summer ever!

Whether you are looking to beat the heat or to relish it, how do you enjoy the summer in your own city? Find out how bloggers across the US and Canada spend summers in their cities, and share your own way to stay savvy in your city.

In my city there are dozens of places to get your caffeine fix, but in the warmer months, no place could be better than Common Grounds. The coffee beans are roasted on the premises and their offerings are expansive - my summer favorite - an iced coconut latte. However, the best reason to go to Common Grounds in the summer is the patio hidden in the back, where you are away from the traffic and can sit at a table shaded by the tree it was built around.

After your coffee, you could walk across the street to do some shopping at Coco's on the Green (my favorite second hand shop) or head a few minutes down the road to the local beach, a place you've seen me frequent quite a bit in my outfit posts, and soak up some sun!

Enter the London Times Savvy Summer Sweepstakes now through June 29th at 11:59 pm est. Must be a resident of the US or Canada.
