Friday Five Under $50

Winter is still holding on strong, with the latest snowstorm causing power outages across the state, myself included. No power in the winter is no fun, especially since that means no heat! At least it was only for one night, but for the moment I'm wishing I were somewhere much warmer! Unsurprisingly I have some very summery items in the mix today.

I was very excited about the Gap & Banana Republic Friends and Family sale, which is going on now, because everything, even denim is 40% off with an extra 10%, and I snapped up three pairs of jeans, black, white, and button fly. Friends and Family is the only sale where denim is included in the promotion, so I like to take advantage. They had a lot of other cute new things like this dress and this skirt, but I'm trying to be good.

This weekend I'll be celebrating my mom's birthday, though she hasn't decided what she wants to do yet. I'm baking her a cake, and while I usually go with Ina Garten's chocolate cake, I wouldn't mind trying something new. Does anyone have a chocolate cake recipie they swear by?

  4. I hope your power wasn't out for too long (and of course you're in full summer dressing mode!).

I have a very old chocolate cake recipe that my mom passed on to me. No clue where it originated but it's never failed me.

  8. Happy birthday to your mom! I haven't made Ina's chocolate cake, but her recipes rarely let me down. I'm usually the only one in my family that wants chocolate cake, and if I'm making it for myself I want a flourless one--they just taste so rich and indulgent to me. I love your summery picks!

  10. Oh that top and denim skirt would go so nicely together! How crazy you lost power. I'm glad it's back now! :) We've had some wild weather here but so far we haven't had our power knocked out. Have seen plenty of power lines being repaired around the area though.

happy birthday to your mum! I'm sure she will love whatever cake you make her :)

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend to end your week! We have family visiting so it will be a busy but fun weekend :)

  13. I can't believe the storms you've experienced in the past week! Being in DC, we got just the tail end of the bad weather, which mostly meant high winds - but they were extremely high winds, the kind that cancel and delay transit, so I could only imagine how bad things were elsewhere. At least we can dream of summer, and start to make purchases for it now. I'm presently dreaming of all the straw bags, and the one you've included in this round-up is now on my wishlist :)
