The big chill

I think the chances of another 80° day this October are slim, now that this cold snap has hit, and every weather forecaster rejoiced when they got it right for once.

At least it hadn't gotten cold yet this past Thursday when I was having the most miserable time in New York. I'd been invited to an event at the Anthropologie show room to preview the BHLDN spring line. The evening promised drinks, hors d'eouvres, a photobooth and hair stylists from Dry Bar. Overall, it sounded like it would be a really fun event.

All day long on Thursday it down poured and I was thinking I might just skip it and stay cozy and dry at home, but then the rain let up, I checked the train times and realized if I wanted to go I'd have to be out the door in under 20 minutes. The event did sound like it would be really fun, so I hustled to get ready, sped to the train station, bolted (in heels) all the way to the last platform (why are the Metro North trains always on the last platform?) and got there just in time to watch the train roll away.

The next train was only 40 minutes later, and it was an express train, so I rationalized I'd only be 30 minutes late, and took it. That train ended up arriving in Grand Central over 10 minutes late. I went to grab a cab, but the line was five people deep and not moving, so I gave up and decided to walk - it would only 15 minutes. I would only be an hour late.

I walked half a mile in the wrong direction. I finally got a cab. It was rush hour traffic. I would only be an hour and a half late. At last, I was on the right street going the right way, and I walked right passed the address. I backtracked to discover the destination was a big black metal door with no outside handle sandwiched between a Moroccan restaurant and a hair salon.

I didn't know what to do. I looked at BHLDN's instagram account and saw photos of the bloggers who had managed to be punctual sipping champaign and getting their hair done. I sobbed. I didn't know what to do, so I went to Starbucks, got a cup of tea, called my Mom, cried, and then went home.

I suppose if there is a moral to this story it's always be on time, or always make sure you have an event coordinators phone number. One of those.

  2. Oyyyy....that SUCKS!!!! That happened to me once, except I didn't even get on the train. It was for a Brahmin party AND a fashion week preview (forgot who for) and I drove to the train station but there was NO parking (it was Milford) so I freaked out and went home and was super upset...

Love this outfit though, always a huge fan of that dress (obviously) :)

  24. I'm so sorry about your unfortunate event. I feel your pain. Usually I sob like a mess in my car and feel super defeated. As a solo adult, I've been late to at least two events that I can vividly recall where I was just too late to get in and completely missed it. The worst part is when someone later calls you and was like "where were you? we had so much fun!" and you proceed to tell them the story and they're like "oh you should've text me I would've come and gotten you." That never helps.

Besides that, I adore this dress and vest combo!

  25. Oh no! I hate that that happened! Then with the rain on top of everything else. Ughh. On a happier note, love that vest!

  27. Oh, what an awful night! I think we can all sympathise, because we've all had those moments when absolutely nothing goes the way it supposed to and we end up stuck in the rain somewhere we didn't intend to be. (Or maybe that just happens a lot in Vancouver? Either way - I get where you've coming from.) It's a shame that the evening didn't work out as you'd hoped, but if nothing else, someday you'll surely look back on that night with, if not a laugh, then at least a rueful smile. And if it helps, your hair looks beyond fabulous in these photos. As do you :)

  28. That's too bad about the event! Why does it always have to happen that way, you start out late because of one thing, then the dominoes just start falling!? You look great though, I love the added layer of that cozy vest!

  35. Aww no, I'm so sorry you had such a miserable time! :(

I hate how being just a minute late can set off a bad chain on events sometimes! :( Hopefully you'll get invited to bigger and better events soon to make up for it - and that they are easier to get to!
