Today's outfit is a little homage to the show Chuck, which is airing it's series finale this evening. It is such a fun show, and it's pretty remarkable in this day and age of television for a show like it to hold out as long as it did; five years and 91 episodes.

I'm definitely going to miss it, and it's theme song, Cake's Short Skirt/Long Jacket.

I've had this maxi coat for quite some time now, I got it my freshman year of high school, and in all honesty, it was because it made me feel awesome, like Carrie-Anne Moss in the Matirx. I haven't worn it in several years... I don't think maxies are back in yet, but I had my heart set on doing a Chuck inspired outfit, and my other option was just wearing my converse sneakers. The coat was more fun.

I also turned my chunky chain bracelet into an impromptu necklace - which actually worked pretty well.

Yesterday Megan and I went to New York for the Karl Lagerfeld KARL for Net-a-Porter, which was sort of an odd event for a clothing line, as there were no actual clothes on site.

Instead, there large photographs of the clothes on the walls and everyone was encouraged to download the KARL app for their iPhones and then you hold them up, and the app launches the store. You tap the item you want to buy in the photo and place your order.

There was a chance that if you scanned an item you might win it, so I kept on scanning for about 20 minutes, no luck.

I did get the gift bag though, which contained an item from the line, a sequined collar. The other item you could possibly receive was a pair of fingerless leather gloves. The bag also had a tee shirt in it, but I don't know what I'll do with that...

After we decided we were tried of scanning the walls in hopes of a free pair of $400 sandals, we went to lunch and then spent the rest of the day shopping and taking photos.

Turns out I really only needed to worry about what coat I was wearing today, since I rarely had it off!

Megan and I both made some good purchases, I took advantage of the Zara sale and got a leather clutch, I also snagged a seafoam cardigan at H&M.

Review: ONA Camera bag insert

The quest for the perfect camera bag started a long time ago, at which time, I had trouble finding any companies that made them. Fortunately that has changed, and I can direct you to numerous bags that make equally nice arm candy as they do a home for your SLR.

Among them there are ONA, THEIT, Epiphanie, Kelly Moore, Jo Totes, Coach, Ketti, Cheeky Lime, Pompidoo, Dre Hartmann, Jill-E ...and I'm not even sure if I got them all....
But here's the thing. All of these bags are pretty pricey, from $98 - $558, for the girl who likes to change her bag as often as her clothes, choosing only one to invest in is hard to do.

As much as I didn't want to commit to a camera bag purse, I hated putting my camera "naked" into my bag, and finally one day stumbled upon the ONA Roma insert (probably while I was busy drooling over their Brooklyn bag, you know, the one from me to you has been toting.

For $60, now any bag could be a camera bag. I was intrigued. I put it on my wishlist and Santa delivered.

The ONA Roma insert was created specifically for a purse, allows easy access to the camera, has one movable divider inside and four outside pockets for stashing small things like a lens cap, memory cards, ect. On its own the insert relatively thin, but combined with a leather bag, it should keep the camera safe for travel.

When using it, my first realization was that not any bag could be a camera bag - the insert is pretty substantial and only a large handbag can accommodate it. It will occupy the entirety of the bag, so unless I'm not carrying an extra lens there isn't much space left for the usual 20 million things I like to carry in my bag.

My second realization was that not every handbag can properly distribute the weight of a camera. By the way, the new Canon D60 weighs significantly more than my Rebel xsi. I had no idea what I was getting into with that... I mean, in the past I'd put my rebel into this small black quilted bag and gone shopping at the mall for hours and was okay. I put the ONA insert and the D60 into my Lucky Brand bag last week and after 10 minutes I thought my shoulder was going to fall off.

It wasn't until today however, that I realized there must be cheaper options for camera bag inserts, like this Click Elite bag for $36, or even better, cheaper and more obvious -- a DIY!

Bottom line: if you are looking for a pretty camera bag purse to invest in, there are actually more options than you knew, but a switchable insert is cheaper, lets you utilize bags you've already got and probably will work just as well.

Feeling inspired by Stacey, I snipped the band and feather off of my Albertus Swanepoel for Target leopard fedora, which makes it a dupe for the J.Crew version, and therefore easier to look like a person who would spend $178 on a hat. However, it is currently on final sale, and with the extra 40% off you can snap it up for $60. (Which is still three times more expensive than the Target version).

I'm also wearing some fleece lined tights, a gift from Alex! They are nice and cozy, thanks Alex!

Tomorrow Megan and I are going to the New York launch of Karl Lagerfeld for net-a-porter, anyone else going to be there?
I'm kinda freaking out over what to wear... I'm thinking leopard dress at the moment.

Recipe: chocolate, cherry & walnut biscotti

What is going on here? This isn't a food blog. Still, this weekend we had a snow storm, and since weekend looks have become the life blood of my outfit posts (thanks winter solstice) my not getting dressed all day puts a cramp in my having a style post to share.

To make it up to you, I've prepared two cooking posts, a review of a camera bag, and a post about my closet. I can diversify if I feel like it.

On to the food. This is the second time I've made these particular biscotti, and they are pretty darn good. I got the recipe from an issue of Cooking Light from a million years ago and made a couple small changes.

Good news, one biscotto (who the heck knew that was the singular of biscotti?) only has 81 calories.*

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole-wheat flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
1/4 cup dried cherries
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350°

2. Combine flours and salt in a bowl, stir well.

3. Beat sugar and eggs with a mixer at high speed until thick and pale (about 4 minutes).
Add oil and extracts, blending well.

4. Add flour mixture at a low speed until just blended.
Stir in cherries, chocolate and nuts.

5. Divide dough in half, shape each portion into a 10" log on the baking tray, flatten to 1" thickness.
Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from the tray and let cool for 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325°.

6. Cut each roll diagonally, supposedly into 20 slices.

7. Place slices cut side down on to baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.
Turn cookies over, bake for 10 more minutes.
Cool on a wire rack.

8. Enjoy.

*Allegedly yields 40 cookies. I got something like 27, so I guess that changes the calorie count a bit.

Sweater + Blazer + Fur Vest = warm and happy.

Sometimes I struggle with layering. I feel like I get lost in the numerous garments, or have to constantly be readjusting because I'm trying to emulate some J.Crew model and for the life of me I do not know how they get them into a button down, two cardigans, and a blazer with a belt around it, all over a strapless dress, and look that good. I've attempted it. It's horrendous.

This is about as much as I can handle, and I'm quite fond of how the fur vest looks layered over a structured piece like the blazer. Positioning the lapel over the fur seemed like a great way to emphasize the blazer and retain the polish a blazer brings to a look.

Cold weather style

For a change, I'm properly clothed to be out in the sub zero (okay 30°) temperatures.
I really love this outfit, just a few simple pieces put together for a really strong look. And even though I've been in love with this leather jacket since 2004, I feel like this is the first winter I'm really putting it to good use... I think it took the blog to give me the confidence to wear edgier pieces like the jacket, and bolder ones like the red pants!

And it's good to know I've got 900 people backing my style choices. Seriously, I hit 900 followers yesterday!

Clearly I'm keeping the spring vibe going with my cotton gingham, and check out this necklace I thrifted for $5 the other day!

In other news, I finally spent some of my holiday gift cards; I had $110 to spend at Amazon and when Endless sent me a 20% off code the other day I finally jumped on two pairs of shoes I'd been coveting forever, both Sam Edelman. A pair of leopard pumps, and a pair of mustard peep toe wedges. Neither fit. They are too long and too narrow. I'm super bummed. The leopard pumps were otherwise perfect. The tones of the browns, the size and ratio of the spots, the hair calf... it was love.
Of course with Endless's 365 day return policy, I can always just hold on to them for the next year and stare at them longingly.
Nevermind, that would probably only make me more sad.

Even though it's been bitter cold out, sometimes the sun tricks me into thinking it's warmer than it actually is, and that cardigans with three quater sleeves and ballet flats are a good idea.

Chloe isn't the kind of dog who typically gets spoiled with a million Christmas presents. She has little interest in unwrapping things, and is afraid of anything that squeaks. Usually she gets a few bones in her stocking, which she enjoys carrying around and eventually hiding under the tree skirt.

This year she got a little something extra special though, a Fabuleash.
This was something I'd spotted in TJ Maxx earlier in December and simply had to buy. It looks like a strand of pearls, and I can't imagine a more elegant leash for my little Chloe. So Parisian, yes?

Since the pearls are strung on a steel cable, I have no worries about it breaking, and it can withstand 100 pounds of pull force. Chloe is definitely not that strong!

The company offers tons of other leash styles, all made with the spoiled little dogs and their over accessorizing Mommies in mind. Chloe and I love the Fabuleash, and my favorite part, their slogan: "Put a little cat walk in your dog walk" is just too cute.

The pearl leash retails for $14.95, but I only paid $7.50 at TJ Maxx.

Fingerless Gloves

Fingerless gloves are worthless as gloves. Their purpose is purely decorative, as they fail to do all the things you need gloves for. They won't keep your hands warm in the cold air, they won't keep your fingerprints out of crime scenes, and they won't conceal your badly chipping manicure.

I purchased these a couple years ago against my better judgement. I saw them, I loved them and then I put them down because I realized how rarely I would wear them. But then Jessica happened to blog about them, and as I'm sure you know, once someone else blogs about something, you want it all the more.

So I went back and got them; they were $20, and I'm currently averaging $10 a wear.

I'm not sure how I became weirdly obsessed with antlers, but this House of Harlow ring has definitely become my favorite Christmas present. Sure, it might just be the tee shirt and this ring for now, but there was almost a bracelet in the mix (it was in a shop in NYC but the checkout line was so long I decided it wasn't worth it) and I'd most likely be open to the earrings. There is also a version of the ring that includes a stone.

I think I'm going to allow the obsession as long as it doesn't creep into decor. If I start mounting things on my walls, please stop me, okay?

They have kindly sent me a pair of diamond studs, the Legendary Round Gemstone Earrings, to review.

Lately I've been a yellow gold girl, but when I looked at the diamond stud earrings on the website, and got to compare how they looked in yellow vs white gold, I realized how much the white gold made the diamonds* really pop. Even though they are small, they still pack a lot of sparkle.

Frilly and Cozy

First of all, welcome to 2012! I hope everyone had fun bidding goodbye to 2011 and got to enjoy a long weekend. Today actually was not a holiday at my place of work, but clearly I took it off anyway.

I've already made my first purchase of the year, the Madden Girl booties I spotted at TJ Maxx. Since I couldn't find my size there, I did end up ordering them from Amazon where they were only $29. I saved a whole dollar and sales tax. (But ended up paying only $8 of my own money because I had a gift card.)

Last week Laurel at Trophy Boutique posted about the trendiness of pairing a sweater with a pleated skirt and I had to try it out immediately. While I love the overall look, I think it would probably work best with a more cropped sweater... I kept trying to scrunch it up all day long, but it refused to stay.

In a silly aside note, this skirt has finally paid for itself. Yes, I've now worn it three whole times! I'm not sure why I haven't worn it more. Mystery of the universe, I guess.

Tropical storm Irene brought flooding, downed trees and left me without power for a week!

I met Alex in New York and went to Central Park for the first time.

I bought a new wide angle lens and took it out for a spin.

I zipped around Washington D.C. on a Segway.

And I went back to NYC for a Be the Buyer Event at TJ Maxx!

November had some pretty nice sunsets and (aside from that one small nor'easter) stayed warm enough to not wear tights the whole month.

I got a new camera!

Honestly I was just playing around with some of the Lightroom presets and thought this split tone process worked well with these photos.

I hope everyone had wonderful holidays, and enjoyed a relaxing day off today. I'm in full on sloth mode, all I want to do is eat cookies and watch Christmas movies... it does not seem like I should be back at work on Tuesday!

My family does the big Italian Christmas Eve, and I like to glitz it up, so I got this slinky chevron sequined cocktail dress at TJ Maxx for $13.

I also got a new pair of dot tights and then immediately got a run in them. Which is what happened to the first two pairs of dot tights I bought on the first day I wore them, so clearly the universe does not want me to wear swiss dots on my legs.

It was great to see all of my family, and get stuffed on tons of wonderful food, and of course get presents! There were some great things under my tree this year!

Clearly I'm having trouble in this harsh winter light, I definitely need to be taking my photos at a different time of day.
Oh how I miss the summer light.
The shortest day of the year is upon us, and I always feel oddly comforted on this day. Because it means everyday from then on will be just a tiny bit longer, and the spring will feel that much closer.

These photos were so overexposed it is remarkable lightroom was able to salvage them... but I still feel like they look just a bit off.

However, it was way too cold for me to even consider re-shooting! I'd like to say it's officially freezing out there, but actually it's only 40°. Whatever, it feels like 10 below to me!

This is only the second time I've taken photos at the library, but I do love the steps and marble and columns. They make for a nice clean backdrop.

Shopping Marathon

This weekend I had to do all my Christmas shopping, becuase I had yet to buy a single thing, and oh hey, less than a week until Christmas... how did that happen?

It involved a seven hour trip to the mall (no exaggeration), a trip to Target, a trip to TJ Maxx, and several trips to Starbucks. Then a rather large order was placed on Amazon to finish it all up.

The Mall was not really the best place to be... lines were long, people kept cutting and then getting into arguments, there were squabbles over discounts, the kiosk people (you know, the ones who want you to polish your fingernails, straighten your hair, get a back massage, ect.) were extra aggressive, and it seemed like every time I found something I liked the only size left was extra large.

Still, I accomplished what I set out to do. I stopped over thinking, I stopped paying attention to how much money I was spending, and I didn't even buy a single thing for myself.

There was one thing though -- black wedge booties, pretty much perfect black wedge booties. They were in TJ Maxx and only $30, but they didn't have my size! So I immediately looked them up, Madden Girl "Virtuaal" and found that DSW has them, but for $50.

Obviously I don't want to spend $20 more on these boots, but they really are just what I want. If they were leather, I'd pay $50, no problem. But for synthetic, are they worth $50?

Anyway... onwards to the wrapping.

I can never think of enough reasons to break out this sequined skirt and make it work for daytime, but in December, for a Christmas Tea at my church, I decided to wear it anyway.

I opted to go with a monochrome ensemble and adding in a somewhat chunky and very casual knit helped lend to the idea of a daytime sparkle. Plus, I knew it would be perfect for Everybody Everywear this month!

The knotted cardigan

The knotted shirt was my go-to styling trick of the summer, so it makes sense that I would want to continue on with that trend and knot my cardigan.
This cardigan seemed like a good candidate, since it's a size too big for me, however I might need to try it with a thinner knit, as this felt pretty bulky.
(Excuse the sever wrinkles in my skirt, you know I hate ironing. I totally wore it out of the house like that. Lets pretend it's supposed to have that crinkled look.)

This year my family has decided to forgo the traditional gift exchange among the adults in favor of a grab bag. This means that I have to come up with a gift that would be equally appealing to both my 26 year old sister-in-law and my 50 something uncle.

Yeah. That's easy.

After hours of deliberation, here is what I came up with, with the main goal of not becoming next years re-gift. (Notice the absense of candles, bodywash, and holiday tchotchkes.)

Does everyone you know have an iPhone? Do you live in a place where it gets cold?
Done and done. Chances are your buddy does not have iPhone gloves, and let me tell you, answering you phone with you nose (while possible) is a little embarrassing, and taking off your gloves is annoying. I have these, I love these.

These come in every style, and have a sleek modern design. The cool factor? The double wall means they are insulated. They are more effective at keeping cold things cool, but I like them for hot beverages as well.

Bonus - you don't have to buy the fancy version, it's available under a creative commons license, which means you can print your own. If you are willing to put in a little effort you wont have to spend a cent (if you print it out at work, but don't say I told you to do that).

Plants are kind of the gift that keeps on giving. These flower twice a year (not necessarily at Christmas) are super low maintenance, and quite pretty. I received one as a Christmas gift five years ago and I still love it.

You can choose any state you want from the Etsy Seller The Blue Print, and perhaps you could encourage the recipient to bust them out right away and stop leaving rings on your coffee table...

Two Chickens via World Vision - $25 (or any other kind of donation, as long as it isn't to the Human Fund)
Donating on someones behalf is kind of a nice gesture, especially when your friends and family already have more than enough stuff of their own.

Getting the Christmas tree is never a simple endeavor. It's an all day affair. Three hours of walking around the tree farm, me, shlepping through mud and dirt, over rocks and brambles in my heels (obviously I wore heels for this). Arguments over which tree we should get ensued.

After all was said and done, we ended up with a Frasier Fir from the parking lot behind the Kohl's. Don't judge.

But I put a lot of though into the perfect tree-getting outfit and arrived here, at gingham and fur.

This mug solves my travel mug conundrums; I hate the plastic tumblers because the plastic always makes the coffee taste weird and you can not put them in the microwave, so I'm stuck drinking my lukewarm coffee. This mug is essentially a regular coffee mug with a removable plastic lid - so I can reheat my coffee to my hearts content.
And did you notice how cute and even non-christmasy those falalas look? I can totally get away with using this year round.

In the past I'd searched and searched for the perfect camera bag that was an elegant marriage of style and affordability. In the end all the bags worth having weren't really in my budget. This little insert solves that dilemma. Now every one of my bags can be a camera bag.

I love a statement ring. I love the color and the huge amethyst. As a bonus, Shopbop states this ring was made in the USA. I heard on the news that if everyone spent $64 on Christmas gifts made in America, that we could create 200,000 jobs. So not only would I get an awesome ring, but someone else would get a job. Even though I already own a pair of red pumps, they are patent Mary Janes and I can not wear them without garnering several Dorothy comments. I do love my little MJs, but I think it might be time for a more grown-up red pump. No one will be going to see the Wizard in these suede platforms.

I feel like I haven't been on a proper vacation in ages, and warmer climates would be a welcome change. (Even though it's been unseasonably warm!)

P.S. This awesome clock I picked up at my church fair for $1 this weekend is broken. It was functioning when I took it home, but 20 minutes after I hung it on my wall it just stopped. I put in a fresh battery and coerced it into movement, only for it to stop again in an hour.

A little searching lead me to a near identical clock from Target, and of the two reviews, one of the reviewers described a similar problem.

I really love the clock though! Can battery clocks be fixed? Would it be worth the effort/money?

When winter comes

That small reprieve from cold winter weather seems to be fading fast. Waking up to frost coated car windows and icy air was inevitable, but it leads to weekend dressing dilemmas.

Work, no matter the season is easy. I can wear high heels because I don't have to worry about walking around, and I can commute in warm boots and change out them them when I arrive. I can wear my pencil skirts (something I still occasionally have trouble incorporating into my weekend wear because I hate the idea of 'wasting' them on a non work day) and my blazers... seasonally, work outfits don't change to drastically.

Weekend wear, is another story. Summer is easy. I can throw on a dress and a pair of flat sandals and some bracelets and feel cute and put together and not over dressed. Then if I want, I can put on some heels and dress it up.

In the winter, I'm at a loss... how do I acheive that same feeling of "I threw this on in two seconds but still look fabulous" when I feel like I need a million layers?

Bare legs are out. Ballet flats are out. I looked at last winters outfit photos... there was a whole lot of jeans + sweaters + boots and leggings + sweater dresses + boots.

I need some winter weekend inspiration.

Now these photos did require a bit of editing of the sky, and let me say, so far as I can tell, layer masks aren't very easy in Lightroom, where is my trusty magic wand?

As usual, I'm not really one for instructions users manuals, I'm more of a figure it out as I go along kind of person.

So far it's been working out okay with the camera, over the past two years I've had people in through both the internet and in real life show me all sorts of things, like white balance settings and flash power settings and what that weird button on the lower left side of the lens does (depth of field preview).

So that's what I'm doing right now... figuring things out and asking for help!

Purple sunset

Today my copy of Lightroom arrived and I was excited to give it a try. I'm definitely a bit flummoxed at the moment, since I had my previous workflow down pat and could get my outfit photos processed in as little as 20 minutes.

Tonight I've been fussing over them for the past hour, because everything from how I select the photos to how they get uploaded to flickr changes with the switch to Lightroom.

I'm sure once I get a feel for everything I'll get my new rhythm setup... so I let you know how I feel about it in another week or so.

I will tell you this much - that sky didn't need a whole lot of editing, it really was that gorgeous purple. Truly one of best sunsets in a while (definitely the one I was hoping for the other night when I was wearing the pink capris). But I'm lucky to have caught it!

And yes, I did get myself that leopard fedora from Target. I feel like the way it looks online is a little misleading - this is not a typical stiff fedora, it's floppy. Also, the web page says it's 100% wool, and well, there is not even 1% wool in this thing! It's combination of rabbit hair, nylon and poly.

The color blocked skirt finally makes an appearance! I don't know what took me so long to wear it, or why I tried three other tops on before I finally settled with the ever versitle leopard button down.

This is what I wore on thanksgiving, even though by the time I ended up getting dressed (after cooking and food prep from 9 am to 2 pm) what I felt like wearing was a pair of leggings and an oversized sweater.

Ah well, leggings and huge sweater, satin skirt and five inch heels - tomato, tomato.*
*It has occoured to me that doesn't really work with out the proper inflection. But how would you write it? Tomato, tomahto?

Triple Stripes

Not quite sure what it is about a holiday weekend, but they always just seem to fly by, even though I barely do much more than spend time with family, eat too much (turkey, lasagna, apple pie, pumpkin cheese cake, boxes of russel stovers), and watch a lot of movies (Super 8, Elf, some Hallmark Channel Originals, haha).

The weekend was blessed with some unseasonably warm weather as well - for the most part I didn't wear tights, but I did throw them on if I was going out after the sunset. I just have to say that I am loving mid fifties - sixties in late November! Fingers crossed we have a mild winter, for a change.

It's always fun to see the rapid transformation after Thanksgiving into every and all things Christmas, especially with all the Black Friday hype and insanity. I didn't go out, and I only made one purchase, Lightroom, which was on sale for $100. So now I can finally do something with all those RAW photo files hogging my hard drive space.

This would have been a great outfit for the day before thanksgiving. I actually wore this way back when on November tenth, and I hadn't been planning on blogging it because it's a repeat of something I wore in April.

On the day before a holiday we get to duck out of work early so I was supposed to get to take good outfit photos this afternoon, only today was a cruddy rainy day. I wore jeans and a plaid top. One of my coworkers commented on how casual I looked.

For someone who claims they hate how they look in pants, I've certainly been wearing them an awful lot lately. I'm still in my tights rebellion I suppose, and I still haven't unpacked any winter things (including my eight million pairs of tights). I was really beginning to think that I just wouldn't at all, but I am kind of wanting to wear this sweater dress, so maybe I will soon. Maybe in December.

Let us give the coat some attention. I love this coat. I got it on clearance a couple of winters ago for $50. As much as I adore the navy and black brocade on the shell, it was that gorgeous paisley lining with jacquard trim that really had me over the moon. I always just want to walk around with it open, so everyone will be privy to it.

When I shop, I always check out the linings of garments. I think this is one of the best ways to evaulate the qualtiy of a piece, because when corners get cut, lining is the first to go. Well made garments always have beautiful linings.

Love like a sunset pt. 2

I wanted there to be a gorgeous pink sunset behind me, but it turned out to be one of those overcast evenings when the sun simply disappears without any brilliant fanfare.

I guess instead of having an outfit to match the sunset, my outfit will just have to be the sunset. And oh, these early sunsets are killing me! Dark by 4:30... I wanna cry.

Over the weekend I went to the movies... twice. I haven't been in months so of course I end up going two nights in a row. First for the obligatory viewing of Breaking Dawn, which I enjoyed as much as one can enjoy a Twilight movie - I dig their soundtracks and their eye candy and have been a devoted fan of vampire love stories since my Buffy days, so I go. I laugh, I have a good time.

The other movie I saw was In Time, which I enjoyed, even if Matt Bomer's role was regrettably small and Vincent Kartheiser's wasn't. I just can not like that guy - I hated him on Angel, and I can't stand him on Mad Men... But overall I enjoyed the concept of the movie and the Bonnie and Clyde/Robbin Hood motifs with the sci-fi backdrop.

How to look taller in photographs

For whatever reason, whether fate or genetics, I am short. Unlike those blessed women who seem to have legs that go on for days, I will forever be stuck with my petite 5'2" stature.

While that means I can throw on my highest heels and never have to worry about towering over anyone, should I decide to trade off my she-devil stilettos for some nice comfy flats, I am right back to being the shortie again.

That does not mean, however, that I have to look short when I take outfit photos.

The camera is wonderful, unlike the naked eye, it can be tricked. After years of practice, here is what I've learned:

Tip 1: Position your camera at hip level, or a little above, just don't ever shoot at a severe downward angle.

Tip 2: Angle your body.

Tip 3: Bend your knee and point your toe, this little trick makes your leg look sooo much longer.

Tip 4: Stand up straight! (Obvious, I know, but sometimes we need the reminder.)

The time has come when I begin to endlessly fantasize about what I'll be wearing to all the upcoming holidays, events and parties. I rarely consider wearing anything other than a dress, most likely of the cocktail variety. Shopbop.com of course has about a million to choose from.

There are lots of cute Velvet dresses which would fit that bill, such as this colorblocked number. The colors and inherent stretchiness of the jersey fabric = perfect for Thanksgiving.

The more modest cut of the Rachel Pally dress would make it ideal for the office Christmas Party - throw on some big statement jewels and you will be just as festive as everyone else wearing their red sweaters and a heck of a lot chicer.

Even though I've been wary about maxi dresses in the winter, surprisingly my favorite pick for the biggest holiday celebration I attend, Christmas Eve, is this Odylyne maxi dress. The metallic fabric makes it perfect for an evening affair, and the asymmetrical hemline keeps it from feeling too formal.

Of course nothing would make shopping for the perfect party dress better than having $100 to spend at Shopbop, so go on, start entering!

Leopard Dress

Leopard seems to be the print that I just can not resist. My closet may be reaching the saturation point: skirt, top, coat, scarfs, tights, belt, hat, now dress -- yet some how I still manage to have three more leopard print items on my wishlist, shoes, bag, and fedora.
(Or more likely, shoes, bag and fedora... damn budget.)

Needless to say, when I saw this Calvin Klein dress at TJ Maxx on clearance for $30 I was helpless to the print's siren song. Not to mention how darn sexy the cut was.

What's this, sunlight? No these photos aren't from today, there wasn't any sunlight today!
I do love these mustard cords though and could not let this outfit go unblogged. Fortunately, pretty much everything goes with mustard, so they are an easy go-to in the cooler months.

My sister criticized me for letting my curls get all frizzy that day, but first of all, I think frizz is unavoidable and they looked fine; second, I love how the sunlight casts that warm glow on the frizz, like a golden halo.

November sandals

Today was another unseasonably warm day, yes those are sandals. I thought about wearing booties, but changed my mind when I saw the high of 66°; I see no reason not get as much sandal wear as possible.

Even though it was overcast all day long, that isn't necessarily a bad thing for photos. I feel like a lot of people dismiss the nice even lighting conditions of an overcast day -- just don't accidentally over expose like I always do!

I was trying to remember if last November had any warmer days like this, and I looked at my old outfit posts - I actually wore this dress with bareish legs and arms. Though I'm pretty sure I was colder then.

Beach in the fall

I'm one of those weirdos who really likes how empty the beach is in the off seasons. It's just as beautiful, but so much more peaceful. (For the most part) I don't have to worry about people staring at me and my tripod, I can take all the time I want. No worries about finding parking or being in the way of someones picnic.

Even though I wont venture on to the sand with my tripod anymore, and the sun was a bit harsh for taking shots outside of the more shaded areas, I still love heading to the beach for my outfit photos this time of year.

Not to mention the weather was quite lovely for November, I could have easily been tricked into thinking it was actually mid September. (If only, 40 days until Christmas - -what?)

Velvet Pants

I didn't do to much this weekend, so I don't have too much to chat about, but the weather was nice and like a proper fall; even though those leaves might be a smidge closer to yellow than red in reality.

Once again I decided to blur the line between leggings and pants. I thrifted these last fall and they were definitely originally meant to be pants - but then I skinnified them, and since the waist band is elastic, they are more like leggings now.

But you know what? I'm calling them pants.

Eventually I will pair these red pants with something other than a striped top or a leopard print top. It hasn't happened yet, but soon I'll run out of stripes and leopard. Then, all the chambray and lace and color blocked looks I've been thinking about wearing will become a reality.

Pattern mixing is a start, anyway.

I wasn't really sure if I was going to like how these photos were coming out at the time, the light is quite hazy and the chain fence didn't seem like the greatest backdrop; but after a bit of processing I really love them, and that fence bokeh? Amazing.

I liked the idea of leopard tights done in more of a fishnet style than a print. It seemed like a good way to be a bit more subtle and classy than having leopard print legs. For just under $6, these Old Navy tights were a steal, although now I'm wondering if I should have gotten them in the brown instead of the black...

I felt like this outfit really needed the pop of red, so I added the cloche, though you have to understand that I did not wear the hat to work. I would get made fun of. No one wears hats in the office.*

*No one but me wears skirts or tights either, but the hat would be pushing it.

Horsing around

Cutoffs over tights is something I've seen quite a bit amongst the other style bloggers, and it's something I would not have considered for myself had everyone else not looked so darn cute in them.

But I think this will be a one time only thing. I like my tights with my roomy tweed shorts, but the pairing with the tight denim, it just isn't me. Now I know - leave the cutoffs and tights to the gals with the toothpick thighs.

One thing I do love about this look - the messy side bun. How have I never worn my hair like this before? It's so perfect, much cuter than the side pony, and much faster than the side braid.

As usual I completely forgot about Everybody Everywear, so I don't have on any brightly colored tights. Just brown. But brown is a color, and it's the best I've got because I've not really been wearing tights. Of course if you are looking for some bright tight inspiration, you can always check out what I wore last winter.

I rust my case

Rust might be one of more underrated colors, but fall is prime rust wearing season, and I couldn't help myself when I spied this top the other week.

Even though black and orange might come off as a bit too "Halloween", rust can play nice with my black velvet blazer (yep, the velvet has come out), and leopard seems like an obvious choice to tie the two together.

See fall, this is me, trying. With velvet, scarfs, open toed suede shoes, and non-stop complaints about how cold I am.

Check it, I actually managed to take a good photo of my shoes. I have the hardest time with foot wear photographs!

A new time

Today marked the start of Daylight Savings Time, the archaic practice of pushing back the clocks so that the sun sets an hour earlier and there is absolutely no hope of taking an outfit photo when I get home from work at 6 pm.

Last winter I worked around this problem by planning out the weeks outfits and photographing them ahead of time. I may end up doing that again, or, rather than plan ahead, recreate and post at a delay.

So, this is actually what I wore today. The rest of my posts this week will be what I wore last week, in whatever random order I feel like posting them in.

This is a new bauble from Poshlocket, the Monica Ring. I fell in love with it because it is big and bold and mixes silver and gold. I am a fan of mixing metallics, and having a piece that already incorporates both just makes it easier to carry through with the rest of the accessories.

Hence the turquoise bracelet that features gold and the watch in silver, together harmoniously on my opposite wrist.

It seems that every morning when I think to myself "What is something chic I can wear today?" Leopard print is what comes to mind, and this top has become indispensable.

Now on to the inspiration. The Free People Holiday catalog arrived in my mail box and it was a feast for my eyes. I think this might be my favorite catalog from them yet, I want to don these clothes, I want to be in these places, in these photographs. Can I just please live in this catalog?

Their theme was "Through the Decades" and they are so chic, so decadent; lace, sequins, velvet, all utilizing pieces to create both vintage and modern looks. There is even a 2012 calendar in the center pages, with seasonally themed outfits.

These, are my new Old Navy pink capri pants. I managed to score them for $10.50, because they were on sale and I got an extra 30% off. I might not have normally bought bright pink pants, but for $10.50, it seemed stupid not to, and best of all - they fit and are super comfortable!!

Even more remarkable is that once I got them, I noticed that I had more than a dozen outfits with pink pants in my inspiration folder, including the one that inspired this look, which I believe is from J.Crew.

Um, how exactly are you supposed to wear the hat with your hair in a bun?

Winter

It snowed on Saturday.

Not even just a little snow, a few flakes that melt the second they hit the ground... no it was a legitimate snowstorm. And my Aunt was having a tent wedding.

Putting aside the fact that I've been grumpy as it is about losing summer to fall, getting a nor'easter in October seems like an especially cruel joke. Mother Nature's way of spiting me after I resolved to not wear tights until November.
I would like it to be noted that I did not wear tights in the snow storm.

Even with the snow, it seemed like the only part of the wedding that was going to be affected was that we weren't going to get to take photos outside (my brother and I were the photographers), that is until the storm caused the power to go out.

Things were a little tricky from there, because the backup generator didn't really have enough power to keep the heat and lights and audio equipment all on at once... more than a few fuses were blown and we kept our coats on all night.

But I still had a really awesome time, the food and the cake were phenomenal, and I could not be happier for my Aunt!

I was lucky enough to get home early from work the other day and actually catch some of the sunset before it was gone.

The days have truly gotten shorter, and the time for outfit photos after work is official over and we haven't even changed the clocks yet.

I'm still not going to wear tights until November. It's only a few more days at this point... I can't really explain why I'm being such a Fall hater this year (more than usual) but I'm having a tough time coming to terms with the change of season. Perhaps it is just a general reluctance to accept that this year is flying by and will soon be coming to an end. Don't freak out, but there are less than two months to Christmas.

Oh, and Stacey, my obsession with your scalloped brim hat has resulted in a purchase of this hat. After all my gushing, did you really think I wasn't going to copy you?

Your kind words really touched me, and many of you offered me a lot of advice that I know I truly need to take.

I am continually astounded by the wonderful community I've found myself in since I started this blog, and that alone makes doing this worth it.

Some other stuff too. Like this camel blazer, which was $20, secondhand from Coco's on the Green. I think it's vintage since it has a union tag, but I honestly don't know that much about vintage - just what I read on the internet.
Still, it's a gorgeous jacket, and a camel blazer is something that has been on my list of basics I've been wanting to acquire.

I can't really say that my other purchases over the weekend were quite as justified as the blazer -- like the earrings I'm wearing; I bought them thinking I'd give them to a friend for her birthday, but then realized they weren't really her taste...

I also picked up a pair of Adrienne Vittadini black pumps because I had a wedding over the weekend and "no" shoes to wear - $20 on clearance at TJMaxx!

From big things like looking for a new job (I don't have a bachelors degree, no one would even look at my resume), to small things like monetizing the blog (I'm just a girl in clearance rack leftovers running around with a tripod, I'll never be the next Atlantic-Pacific, who would sponsor me?), I even keep myself from doing fun things like going to see a concert next month (It's on a Wednesday night, no one wants to go with me, driving in New Haven is scary).

H&M continues to be the most annoying place to shop. When I spied another blogger wearing this horse print top, I fell in love with it. I then went hunting for it and searched three different H&Ms (in three different states!) before I finally found it.

But I like it. And a lot of other people like it too. I got two compliments on it! None from my Sister however, who gave me the "You are seriously going to wear that in public?" look when I victoriously waved it in her face.

In the Fall

I like the day time. The sun is out and it's all light layers and bare legs and sandals, maybe a cool breeze making you feel the crispness in the air....

But as soon as the sun sets you are all chattering teeth and goosebump covered legs and "Oh my God, I'm so cold I'm gonna freeze to death!"

Which is why I'm a summer lover. I would have though that being born and raised in New England I would not be such a cold wimp, but I truly am.

I'm starting to have my change of season wardrobe freak-out. I haven't done the closet switch out yet. The thought of sweaters does not bring a smile to my face, but rather strikes fear in my heart. Because I know just how cold it's going to get, and just how long it will stay that way. I'm not looking forward to it. I don't even want to think about this. I know the highs are still mid 60s, but one week ago it was over 10° warmer - I know how quickly things can change.

I know most of you are really excited about boots and sweaters and wool, but is anyone still living in denial and in fear of knits like me?

New stripes

Monday was a lovely holiday. The bright, sunny, summer like day seems like it was a century ago and not five days, but it's been raining since. (Maybe this weekend will turn out nice.)

This top is new, it was my one clothing purchase in Georgetown, second hand for $7. Don't you hate it when you go out with the intentions to buy something and find nothing? I was a bit concerned with the wrap top exposing a bit too much (might have to add a safety pin in the future) but I was determined to come home with something and this top seemed like my best choice. Bright, cute, and cheap.

The other star (other than the starfish) of the outfit is my new custom designed striped clutch from Hilside Bags. I won it from Follow Your Bliss's Giveaway last month and it finally came!

I chose the largest size so that I could fold it over, and went with a classic stripe on the outside and a fun print on the inside.

Hilary, the owner and creator was especially wonderful and patient with me when I accidentally used up my gift card code without managing to purchase a bag...twice.

The clutch is beautiful, so many thanks to Follow Your Bliss and Hillside Bags!

20 Minutes in the life of a TjMaxx buyer

Yesterday I was invited to a Be the Buyer event at TJMaxx in New York City.
It was at 9 am, which meant getting up before sunrise to make the trip from Connecticut, but I'm definitely glad I went!

Over breakfast in the store (while it was still open for regular customers) Alison Deyette went over how the buyers for TJMaxx and Marshalls work differently than buyers for all other stores.

Every TJX buyer focuses on only one certain line, like just women's fashion, or shoes, or bedding and they travel 40 times a year all over the world to find the best deals on the things trending at that moment. When the TJX buyers find something they want for the stores, that item is on the shelf in two weeks; every thing in the stores is very current. And every store gets in a shipment of 10,000 new items each week. Which means I am completely justified when I want to go every week...

A lot of people I know seem to think that all the merchandise in TJMaxx is defective or past season, which is not true - TJMaxx is just able to negotiate with designers for all of their merchandise that the department stores didn't buy, and they can even get unique pieces, like certain styles done in different prints or colors. Since they don't have to promote the designers, they can keep the costs lower.

As for past season merchandise, it is there, but the tags are labeled as such, and those items are hardly out of style - in fact, I found a pair of my Steve Madden Inka boots there! Yes, they are last year's, but the color and style is far from out of fashion.

Then everyone was given a buyer challenge, we were paired off and given a department to shop in and we had to come up with five items that fit into the TJMaxx buyers code: Fashion, Quality, Brand, Price.

I was partnered with Alex and we hit the shoe isles! I think I took this challenge way to seriously, we really scrutinized every pair of shoes, and I tried to come up with only shoes that I would reasonably buy (sorry $300 pair of YSL pumps, you are still over my budget even at 20%-60% off).

Then everyone did a little show and tell, which we all had a lot of fun with, and you could really see how many wonderful designers are there, and just how great the TJMaxx discounts were!

The rest of the day was of course spent drinking coffee, eating and shopping!

I was really debating if I should do another post on D.C., three really seemed like enough, but I took a few photos on my last day which were just too awesome to not blog.

On Sunday, we hit up the monuments once again, this time in the light of day. I knew before planning the trip that I wouldn't be able to go in the washington Monument because of potential damage from that earthquake a while back, but I did not know that the reflection pool was dug up!!

Apparently last October (so a whole year ago) they realized that the pool was leaking and turning green and decided it needed to be redone. And 12 months later it still looks like a mud pit. So much for the awesome photo I was hoping to take.

The rest of the day was spent wandering the halls of the National Gallery, which was not to be missed. So many gorgeous works of art, and a really cool Andy Warhol exhibit (but you weren't allowed to take photos of it, sorry!)

Goodbye D.C.!

Georgetown

Georgetown is a shopping mecca. The streets have a lovely old world feel, but are lined with all the big names and a few little unique shops and restaurants in between. We spent something like seven hours in Georgetown, but somehow didn't manage to see even half of what we wanted too...

It was also super crowded there, I suppose being the first gorgeous Saturday in weeks every person for miles had the same idea. It was impossible to get a table at any of the restaurants, even at 3 pm, and eventually we found our way to Serendipity 3 (NYC's counterpart, and just as cute, maybe even a bit bigger).

We sat at the bar since it was the only place open and had to order their famous frozen hot chocolate. It was quite yummy, and did taste exactly how it sounds. Make some hot coco, freeze it, put it in the blender. Why hadn't I realized I could make it at home before?!

Then there was Georgetown cupcake. The line never ended. All day long, an hour wait, people lined the streets, I think there was even a police presence monitoring the line at all times as well... I figured if people were going to stand in such a crazy long line for these cupcakes, then they would be the best cupcakes ever.

I thought when I took a bite I would go weak at the knees, that I would race back to the end of that line and wait all over again for another taste.

But they were just cupcakes. Nothing special, and my chocolate cupcake didn't even taste very chocolatey and the frosting wasn't very creamy. In fact, I'm quite certain that I make better cupcakes. If you'd like to come over, I'll bake you some, and I won't even charge you $2.75 for it.

Since I knew Everybody Everywear was coming up, I made sure to pack this pink skirt, made by me!
My friend actually asked me if I'd gotten it from ModCloth, and I said, "No, this is the skirt I made to look like the skirt from ModCloth!"

My Segway has a first name

I would go so far as to say that my number one objective for my visit to D.C. was to go on the Segway tour. Ever since I found out such a thing existed three years ago, I set my heart on going.

Because we didn't think to book the tour prior to arriving in D.C. the only time we could go was 6 pm, so I hope you enjoy my night photos!

Riding the Segway is really fun, really easy, and you feel a bit like a celebrity as people point, take photos and generally look at you like, "Damn, I wish I were on a Segway!"

Yes, it's a super touristy thing to do, and $70 for the three hour tour isn't really a bargain, but I'd definitely do it again.

And yes, my Segway was named Lady Freedom.

I'm taking a long weekend with a friend to visit Washington D.C., which I've never properly done. I'm hoping to take the Segway tour, go to some museums, take lots of touristy photos, and try out some great restaurants.

Office cliché

The bow blouse, the pencil skirt, the high heels, this look says one thing: Sexy Secretary.
But I suppose things are cliché because they work, and I do love this combination.

Even though the blouse is vintage, the snake print skirt is on trend for this fall and the pumps have a great mix of contemporary flair with a somewhat classic shape. (See a better photo of the shoes here.)

I wonder if this inexpensive 100% poly blouse ever looked this good in it's original decade?

It seems like the sun just does not want to come out at 6 pm these days, and I'm cranking up the ISO, so forgive the grainy photos. Soon it will pitch black at 6 when I get home from work and I'll have to deal with taking outfit photos at a less convenient time.
Not looking forward to the shorter days!

A little exposure

On Sunday (I'll never get caught up with my postings) I had another bridal shower to attend. I was really, really over dressed for this one. Some of the guests were wearing yoga pants... But that has never bothered me before; I love having an occasion to get dressed up for, and this lace top was in need of some love.

My sister thinks wearing the lace top with my bra being visible is an atrocity. I'm sort of on the fence with the exposed bra issue. Sometimes I truly hate it, but for some reason I don't mind it with this top - maybe because the lace is so thick, and the spacing is tight.

When I was in High School I thought wearing a leopard print bra with a spaghetti strap top looked good, and now I consider that a huge fashion misstep. So I'll let you know how I feel about this pairing in another eight years.

What thrift dreams are made of

I go thrifting quite a bit. Frequenting my local shops is almost like an addiction. Since there are two small ones very close to me I pass by them often, and I often struggle to tell myself not to pull over and pop in, "Just for a second, in case something new came in."

In all the times I've thrifted, I haven't found too many gems. I always hear the stories from other bloggers, that practically mint condition vintage designer item for a dollar, barely worn Frye boots in their size for $3... yes, I hear the stories and they are what compel me to keep going back.

This bag and this trench however, are my diamonds. The London Fog trench was only $3 and was in my size, so that was a huge score! (Trenches aren't too hard to come by, but are always in comically huge sizes.) The bag that you have seen plenty of these past few days was $10 (For many of you Good Will thrifters, that might seem expensive, but for Coach, I didn't think twice.) I even had a woman compliment it, and when I told her I'd gotten it for $10, she said she'd give me double for it! (Sorry, but not a chance!)

So I keep on hunting, and hoping that my next great thrift find is just around the corner.
(It's not however, at the consignment store just beyond the sunflower painted fence.)

You've already seen the long, and I know, would it kill me to actually come up with a new outfit once in a while? I just get on these kicks and I can't seem to shake them.

This is also a problem that comes from my refusal to stop buying the same thing over and over again. This is really bad when it comes to stripes. So as the owner of a wide striped maxi dress, mini skirt and blazer, you are just going to have to be subjected to seeing me reincarnate the same look until I tire of it. Someday. Eventually. Maybe.
