On my own

I promise to only acknowledge the positive this day has to offer.

Taking my own outfit photos has it's pros and cons. When I started this blog I wouldn't have dreamt of asking anyone else to take my photos. It was my blog, my craft, my style. Naturally I wanted to get out my backyard, because how long can you look at the same garage door as the backdrop for every post? So I started driving to the center of town and opting for the places with the most seclusion I could find, but still, people stared, commented, photobombed. Cameras fell, lenses broke, lessons were learned.

I'm smarter, and more cautious when it comes to my camera, I make sure the lens is always situated over a leg so the camera can never fall lens first. I'm polite to people who pass by, I laugh at those who tease and mock. Though truthfully, having a person behind the camera makes life so much easier. Photos get done faster, when I want different angles it's not an ordeal of adjusting tripod legs and half a dozen test shots, and I don't feel uncomfortable when people walk by.

But sometime it's nice to be alone with the camera, not to have to worry about someone else's agenda or worry I'm being annoying when something isn't framed just so. Generally these are the warmer days though. Below freezing, forgetaboutit.

  1. I have so much respect for the fact that many bloggers take their own photos...I've been so lucky to not have to do that---yet! But, I suppose it's like anything else, it's all experience, and once you learn it, it's all good??
I love this hue of blue on you, Lydia!! And that tassel on the purse, just makes it all so much better!

  3. The blue and black look amazing together, there is something that screams "woman in command" in this look.
Well you know how I feel about pictures. While I do wish I had someone to take them for me, I am picky and if its going to be bad, it will be my bad. I am not happy with my pictures. I have dropped and ruined a camera. My second camera is barely alive after being dropped at least 7 times. My tripod is my car, or a fence or a trashcan.. wherever it will stand.

  4. Those jeans are amazing on you! This is such a chic outfit! I wish I were better about taking my own photos, but I typically wait until my husband is available! It really is easier!

  6. I have never once taken my own outfit photos and I must say, I have always had serious admiration for anyone who can. I often joke that if I hadn't already been married to a photographer, I would never have started a blog, but truth be told, that isn't really a joke - six years later I'm just getting comfortable in front of the camera and starting to have a good understanding of how things work when I'm behind it, but there's no way I'm ready to start working on my own with a tripod. And honestly, I'm not sure I would want to - but my hat is off to anyone who can do it and enjoys it. Speaking of hats, I love this one on you! And the coat... My love of the coat defies conventional adjectives, I just want to type a line of heart eyes emojis ;)

  8. Loooove this monochrome look! And I know what you mean, I never used to ask people to take my photos because I was embarrassed. Now I hate doing it on my own, haha

  10. I am still awkward as hell taking photos in public - either publicly or with Shaun - I just never got enough confidence up around doing that.

  15. You look so glam here Lydia! And I have nothing but the utmost respect for bloggers who take their own photos. I am hopeless with a camera so it's nice to have my husband do it for me (even though he just points and shoots lol). I always get nervous when people pass by, and I can't believe that anyone has the gall to make rude comments! You look beautiful and blogging is an art if done with love and passion. Good for you for going for it!

  16. This is a gorgeous look. Literally everything about it is perfection! I take my own photos too and while it's a great learning experience it is just a pain at times. You look really beautiful in these pics and are an amazing photographer.

  17. I seriously cannot believe you take these yourself! You are truly amazing and I admire you soo much for doing so. BTW people do not get any less annoying with someone using the camera either. I get waves, and honks, and people staring like crazy.
Also, this outfit is gorgeous and I love the combo of the black and blue!

  25. This outfit is so chic and I love that hat! I'm so impressed that you take your own photos. I knew you took some, but I didn't realize the extent. I tried the tripod for about a week before recruiting my mother to be my photographer...

  26. I completely understand how awkward it can be to take photos solo with a tripod! I used to do it in my downtown during lunch break, so there were always people around. I much prefer having someone do them for me most days, but I agree that doing them solo means taking my time and getting all the shots I want!
