Not Shopping

There are infinite possibilities in my closet, I do not need to add anything new to enjoy the clothes I have.

Yesterday I mentioned that I'm starting a shopping ban. I can't say I've ever done a shopping ban in the past with the level of success that I'd hoped, so the only thing I can say that will make this time different is determination.

The problem with my shopping is that it isn't a passive habit. There was a purse in Banana Republic and it was on sale, but not a great sale. Then there was a better sale but it sold out online in my local store, so naturally rather than just accepting that I'd missed out on it, I was calling stores until I tracked it down. Or I see an item on another blogger but it's from two years ago, so I create eBay saved searches and obsessively check Poshmark until I can buy it.

I devote so much time and energy to shopping that I know could be better spent on other ventures.

Not to mention how overstuffed my closet currently is, and spending more time focusing on what I have than what I want will be a good opportunity to really make note of what is working for me and what I should get rid of.

  2. I should really impose a shopping ban. Christmas wiped my bank account out, so I currently don't have the funds... but that doesn't mean I am not looking and planning for my next paycheck! Part of my problem is that I don't have some things that I could really use (like a few more dresses and skirts for work), but instead I buy 3 pairs of booties (when I just needed 1), and new scarves (because I only have 75), or cute workout clothes (because I only have a drawer full). Good luck on your shopping ban! Stay strong!

  3. Gosh, I can so relate Lydia!! I do realize that I have an obsession/issue with too many clothes, but I always rationalize that it's better than drugs.
And, really, it doesn't help that I see all kinds of fabulous things on other bloggers!
I'm trying not to buy anything this month also---we'll see how successful I am too!

  4. I totally hear you and that is something I am working on this year as well. I am going to be spending more shopping time on things for my house rather than clothes. I love your coat here! Happy New Year!

  5. That's a really good point, you know - that shopping isn't a passive habit. While I don't think I would use the energy I do spend on shopping on anything much more productive (because I would probably just move it towards time watching Netflix), I've never really considered how much time I might be giving to shopping that I could use for other things. You've definitely made me think with this post. And on a fashion-related note, I love this outfit! If that gorgeous coat is one of the things that has been hiding in your closet, you definitely have some gems that are deserving of more wear.

  6. I've always tended to think of my shopping as a passive habit but after reading this and really giving it more consideration, I think I'm actually much more active about it than I thought...which is rather an interesting turn of events for me.

  7. I definitely struggle with spending waaaay to much time devoted to clothing. I've never tried a shopping ban, but I might need to give it a try!

  8. The struggle is real on my end too, sister. My closet is stuffed and I haven't even wore half of the things in there, but I still buy clothes. Honestly I think I need a therapy now. I need a shopping ban for sure.
On the other hand, you look so beautiful. You have on some great ensemble. :)

  9. Sometimes it's hard not to buy things without a second thought. I have definitely been guilty of tracking something down only to get it and only wear it a time or two. On another note, this coat on you is just gorgeous! I love the fur collar.

  10. Good luck with your shopping ban. Last year I went without shopping for about 4 months and it was really tough but it helped me with my shopping now. I really think about what I purchase now.

  11. Hello. . .there is nothing better than retail therapy! I enjoy it and since I am the take back queen, if it does not work I just take it back. Sometimes I shop all day and not buy a thing! Am I the only one?? Happy 2017 my Dear.

  14. Good luck with your shopping ban! That's never easy to do--the thrill of the hunt can be so fun. My problem right now is that I only have a limited budget but a long list of things I want. That's always the case though, right?!

  17. It's always hard giving up something you love to do but with focus and determination you can do it. I stopped shopping a couple of months leading up to the holidays which was very hard but broke down after the holidays. I don't feel bad though as I got pieces that are versatile and classic and the deals were amazing for quality items. Good luck!

  18. Totally agree with you -- I invest way too much time related to shopping that can be better spent elsewhere. That in of iteself is a great reason for the ban.
PS: this outfit is AMAZING. Love how classic yet chic it is.

  19. Lydia, you should follow Mica from Away From Blue blog. She's on a 6 month shopping ban. You've always had an awesome closet. What I liked about you, was how you found things on sale or discounted. Things you grow tired of you can sell on eBay or send to a consignment shop. I've tailored down my wardrobe considerable since blogging. Good luck! I love your outfit. That jacket is awesome and so are the boots & jeans.

  20. I love a shopping ban! I have done that only once before and I saved a so much money. I allotted some money for a little shopping spree when the ban was over. It was very gratifying and gave me something to look forward to.
Your coat is absolutely stunning and I love your monogrammed bag. Beautiful!

  21. My shopping is definitely passive, but like you, I think I have way too many items in my closet already. Anyway, I'm totally loving your coat.

  24. Okay I love shopping, but have really cut down on it and it's so nice. I do still shop quite a bit and am planning on going through a no shop month sometime this year, just not sure when!
