All about the layering

My approach to layering is that less is more. I would love to pile it on and still look like a J.Crew model, but that is never going to happen. I try not to bring in too much bulk and stick to a limited color pallet.

I hate it when my sweaters bunch in the middle over a button down, so by choosing a thinner knit I can fold it under, thus giving the sweater a more cropped appearance that allows the button down to show and the bunchiness to be eliminated.

What are your layering tips?

  1. It's funny, but layering is one of those things I really feel like I'm only just starting to get the hang of - probably because it isn't all that necessary where I live. I also often find lots of layers to be too bulky, so if I need extra warmth, I've traditionally favoured more hidden layers, like an extra tank top under my sweater. But lately I've been loving the look of a silk blouse peeking out from underneath a sweater. And you make the collared shirt and sweater combination look so good, I just may need to try it next!

  2. You look so warm and cozy...and of course, stylish! You nailed the layering thing. You don't look stuffed up, which is something I struggle with when layering, lol! Great vest!

  3. Perfect layering here! I wish I could layer more than I do, but sometimes i think it is just so uncomfortable to keep piling things on haha!

  4. You're better at layering than I! I can't really do it all that well. But sometimes I get lucky, haha

  6. I think one secret of layering is not all items work well! My first layering piece is usually pretty tight (tight enough that I wouldn't wear by it by itself). In the end, it's like everything else in life: practice, practice, practice.
You have hit the nail on the head with this combo, I think!!! Jodie

But this looks really good- two in one: warm and chic.

  11. Duh! I can't believe I've never thought of that! I hate it when cardigans do the same thing. I will have to try your trick next time! I love your gorgeous sweater layered like this!

  14. I think your layers look sleek and chic here! I agree, it's sometimes hard to layer without all the bumps and bulk. You nailed it though!

  15. Loving your layers! In theory the less is more is great, however when it is super cold, I go with the "more is more and I look like the Pillsbury dough boy but I am warm" look.

  18. Good layering advice! :) I tend not to layer too much if I've got a knit and a jacket on I'm much too hot usually - it really doesn't get cold enough here. I can imagine living somewhere with snow you'd become a layering expert like yourself very quickly! :)

  20. You nailed this without adding any bulk- layering pro! Thin knits on the bottom layer(s) is my go-to tip, too. If you start too thick, you'll end up looking like the JCrew Marshmellow Woman. :)

Digginggggg the jeweled sweatshirt- such a jam!

  21. Great tip! I love cozy, layered looks too, but worry about looking too bulky. This is a great look!

  22. Preach it about the layering. I also feel this way about people who can layer pants under their pants without looking literally four sizes bigger! I am just soooo not that person and I've had to adapt to it!
