Layers

Once again I am deceived by the illusion of effortless layering put forth by J. Crew; specifically layering a chambray shirt. They are always layering things like sweaters over chambray shirts and not looking bulky or lumpy at all.

Also, reasonably tight sweaters don't just slide over chambray, I had to pull it on and position it, bit by bit... a saner person would have just given up.

With a weather forecast promising near 60's for this week, hopefully my layering days are numbered.

  8. LOVE the layering!! I tried to layer a sweater over a button down last week but the sweater was too loose in some places and tight in others so I gave up, haha

  9. It looks pretty effortless to me! You would have tricked us all if you hadn't given the narrative!

I read, on somebody's blog, a trick for layering a shirt under a sweater: first, layer it all together OFF your body and then pull the two pieces, together, over your head. I'm not sure how easy it is to then button the shirt underneath, but it's worth a try!

  14. Love your layering! I know, sometimes it's really hard to put on certain layers. Sometimees I spend up to 20 minutes trying to get it to look alright... haha.

  23. i love this look, but i can definitely understand the work/frustration that goes into layering...that's why i've just decided that unless it's a thin slinky blouse, i can't wear it under a sweater. you look great, and not lumpy at all!

  24. You are so right- layering is not as effortless as they make it seem! But I think you persevered here and you look really cute :)

  26. Yeah, when I think chambray having layers I think bulky, too... and yet you look perfectly smooth and totally not bulky here. Awesome! And you put such an awesome pattern over it, too.

Here's to hoping that it warms up for you!

  28. I love the effect. You wear animal prints so effortlessly, they look great on you.
I get fooled by the J.Crew Mags sometimes too. The bulkiness seems so much worse in person.

  29. love your leopard sweater, such a great fit and ideal pairing with the chambray.

  30. Maybe at pro photo shoots they cut away the majority of the shirt just showing the cuffs and collars so it still looks streamlined?

  31. I think you nailed the layering look. I sure hope you are right and the need for layers will soon just be a distant memory.

  32. I really love the leopard sweater.

  33. I think you nailed it. You look as effortless and easy as the J. Crew models. I love this look.

"chambray layering done simple" - or at least you made it lOOK simple :)
    Nice job !

  35. Denim and leopard...your chic perfection!

  36. Yeah, they make it look easy and they could layer five things on top of three things and the model still looks like she's wearing thin layers. Maybe they cut all the under fabric off. hmmmm. Trickery.

You look fantastic in this. I think you nailed this layered look. Love it.

  37. I hate it when I find cute layering inspiration from places like J. Crew, and then try it myself and end up looking all lumpy! Your layering, however, looks very nice :)

By the way, I love the location where you shot these photos!

  46. Again with the cute red coat and yellow accessories! You could wear this combo everyday - it's so great! And I hope warmer weather comes your way. It's been in the 50's-60's here all week, which has been awesome.

  47. You definitely pulled off the effortless layering you were wanting with this ensemble (even if it was a struggle)! Haha, I agree with you though, I always have these ideas of cool outfits in my mind, and when I put them on I think...oook this may not have been made for my body type, or the fabric I'm wearing. I love love LOVE the bag you paired with this-adds a little graphic interest- so chic!

  49. I can't do J.Crew layering at all... more than a shell and a light sweater and I quickly become the Michelin man. I've always wondered how they get five shirts on those models and manage to make it look good... Photoshop? I think they should put you in the J.Crew catalogue instead.

  50. It was worth all the annoyance of putting it on ... super, super look.
I was a bit iffy about chambray and animal print together but your look is fabulous!

  53. I'm always amazed by JCrew's layering also... But even when I buy the same exact outfit, I can never pull it off, it's like they have some kind of magical layering skill. You, however look fabulous in this outfit. Very chic and JCrew-like and not at all lumpy or frumpy. The pops of yellow and red are brilliant... Love the look! <3shelby
